Dorothy T. Barnes
SUFFOLK -- Dorothy Trammell Barnes died Dec. 25, 2002, at Autumn Care of Suffolk. Born in Portsmouth Feb. 13, 1924, she was the daughter of the late James L. Jolliff Sr. and Thelma Andersen Jolliff. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Henry Frederick Trammell, a sister, Mae Jolliff Mayes, and a stepson, W. Neal Barnes.
Mrs. Barnes is survived by her husband, William W. Barnes; her brother, James L. Jolliff Jr. and wife Dot; her aunt, Mary J. White, all of Portsmouth; two daughters, Linda T. Williams of Lynchburg, Va., and Mildred T. Barnes and husband Stephen of Hampton, Va.; her stepson, Dr. Donald W. Barnes and wife Peggy of Greenville, N.C.; two granddaughters, Laura P. Brooks and husband Brian of Covesville, Va., Ellen F. Barnes of Hampton; three stepgrandchildren, Dr. Robert W. Barnes and wife Jessica of Auburn, Ala., Sarah B. Adams and husband Todd of Winterville, N.C., and W. Wesley Barnes of Tokyo, Japan; two step great-granddaughters, Jackie and Carson Barnes of Auburn, Ala.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Barnes graduated from Wilson High School, Portsmouth. She was employed in the Portsmouth city schools for more than 25 years and served in various capacities. She was secretary to Harry L. Hunt when he was superintendent of the school board and worked in the office of Robert Sweeney. Additionally, she served as librarian of Robert E. Lee Elementary, and as a secretary, bookkeeper and administrative assistant at Lee Elementary, Hunt Junior High School and Wilson High School. Always an active participant within the school and community, Mrs. Barnes served as president of the PAEOP, president of the PTA and was a lifetime member of the PTA. She was a former member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church and a current member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Missionary Circle.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, 2690 Bridge Road, Suffolk, by the Rev. Jay Russ of Hampton Baptist Church. Interment will be at Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and after the funeral at the family home. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the support, care and love of so many friends and caregivers throughout the years.
