I have recently started tracing my Joss family history in Northern Ireland. I have obtained information on the Joss's born in Belfast but it would appear that we originated from Scotland. I have not yet obtained information on my Scottish ancestors.
I think that the Joss's in Belfast originated from two brothers one of which I know was a soldier in the 73rd regiment, which was a Scottish regiment. I suspect he was posted in Belfast's Artillery Barracks around 1880 - 1885 due to some unrest in the province, met a local girl, got married and stayed there.
One of the brothers I believe was called Alexander Joss, born around 1864 in Scotland. Alexander was a Private in the 73rd regiment and married Sarah Strain on 15 October 1886 at St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast. The family have had a connection with St Anne's ever since. Alexander's Father was called James Joss, and James's occupation was 'gardner'.
I also have details of a William Joss who married Maria Harding on 1 August 1887 in Belfast. Although William's occupation was given as 'shopman' I assume that he was the brother of Alexander, as Joss is a very unusual name in Northern Ireland.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who can provide information on this link of the Joss family.
