I had a search done of the last name at a little geneology place at the base of the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland and discovered a number of clans that matched for it, but the largest by far was for the original name "McEnerie" as a match to "Kanary".Certainly, here in Cape Breton NS Canada, there are variations, like Canary, Kanarie, and so on.Mostly the C and the K lke the bird though.Apparently we arrived here in CB up in Capstick way (north of the Island).
There was a lot of info, including the family crest for McEnerie. The latin saying for it was "Mayo Mori Quam Foedari".For those who know latin I'm sure this will be interesting, I like to think it means "an interesting name that will be impossible to find definitive geneology of".
Hope this helps.I also found the same info while in Scotland while searching again.
