HIGHWOOD-Arvi Arnold Kangas, 82, a decorated Navy veteran and retired electric co-op employee, died of an aneurysm Tuesday at a Great Falls hospital. A graveside service with military honors is 11:30 at Pine Cemetery in Spokane. Surviving Arvi are his wife, Luella F. "Pat" Kangas of Highwood; his son and daughter-in-law, Arvi L. and Faye Kangas of Great Falls ... Arvi Arnold Kangas was born 16 Dec 1921 to Arvo & Mary (Autio) Kangas in Wakefield MI.His mother died when he was young & at the age of 8, Arvi came to Great Falls where he was raised and educated. During the Depression, Arvi worked for CCC Camp at Neihart with Company 1999 from 1938 to 1939. He entered the Navy on Oct. 7, 1942, serving on the USS Halford and the USS Renate. He received the American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal (six stars) WWII Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal (two stars). Arvi was honorably discharged July 22, 1946. He was employed by the Anaconda Co. (ACM), Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane, Wash., Lewis Construction and then Sun River Electric Co-op, retiring in January of 1984 following 31 years of service. Arvi was a member of the VFW Post 1087 and Coast Guard Auxiliary. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, painting, sculpting and sketching.
