From researching this family I have been able to find them in the old Newark, NJ Census'.This line seems to link to a Stephen KAUFMANN and his wife Wilhelmina _____. Apparently Wilhelmina died sometime between 1910 and 1920 because in the 1920 census Stephen is listed as a 'widow'.
Due to the fact that members of this line may still be living. I will not add anything further than what was posted in the 1900 Irvington, Essex Co., NJ Census - dated June 11th.
Stephan KAUFMANN (always spelled this way) b. Aug. 1868 age 31 married 10 years b. Germany Germany Germany (he and both parents all born in Germany)-carpenter-immigrated in 1883 been in the U.S. for 17 yrs. Can read and write.(all of my efforts so far to locate his immigration/naturalization papers have been unsuccessful).
Wilhelmina wife age 32 b. Apr. 1868 - had 7 kids 4 living b. Ger. Ger.Ger. immigrated in 1885 been in U.S. for 15 yrs.
John son b. Sept. 1890 age 9 b. NJ
William son b. Apr. 1892 age 8 b. NJ
Frederick son b. Oct. 1893 age 6 b. NJ (his first name might have been Stephen...in other census' he is called Frederick, Sr.)
Rudolph - son b. May 1897 age 2 b. NJ
Wilhelmina had a few more children after this but again, some of them may still living.
This is the family that we share Ydna with and so far the ONLY ones we seem to share any Ydna with at all.
It is very close so we could Possibly find our Common Ancestor between us.
These Kaufmann's both came from the Wurttemberg, Germany area. Our relatives were Merchant's (how appropriate since Kaufmann means Merchant in German...grin).
Their ancestor Jurg Martin came to America in 1752 as an indentured servant but after doing his indenture he was granted 100 acres of land. He married a German gal named Katherine (last name still unknown to this day), but Jurg had a brother named Johann Frederick who came to America by 1756 because in that year he purchased 150 acres of land. He came with his wife Elizabeth and family and was able to pay for his and his families passage across the pond.
They were all Lutheran's. The use of the names Martin, Andrew, Alexander, George, John, Christopher etc. were quite common among that clan. OH, and one of these families must have decided to go back to the original German spelling of their family name because they switched it to KAUFMANN too.
I have made several attempts to contact this family that we share Ydna with but so far I've had no replies back. It is possible that they no longer have the same email address that they did when they did their Ydna test; so I post this info in hopes that someone related to them will let them know we have a Ydna match.
That is how I found them and the name of their earliest ancestor Johann Georg KAUFMANN (as his name was spelled) and Anna RUOFF, we would love to exchange family stories. We have photo's and everything which I think would be fun to compare and see if our relatives look alike.
Thank you, and if anyone relates to Stephen and Wilhelmina KAUFMANN's line of Germany to Newark, NJ out there, you will also be a Ydna cousin, so hope to hear from you too.
