Hello there, I'm trying to trace the family of my paternal grandmother Mary Alice Kavanagh who married my grandfather Patrick Christopher Leahy in Dublin in the early years of the 20th century. They had two children, Sheila and my dad Dermot (Derry) Leahy b 1917 d 1998. Mary Alice died in July 1918 a few months after the birth of my dad. We think she probably died in the Spanish flu pandemic of that time,. After her death my dad was sent to live with the Smyth family and was brought up for the first few years of his life by Henny (who we think was a friend of Mary Alice) and two youngsters Delma and her bother Noel( who died when he was 4 1/2) Derry's sister Sheila was sent to live with Leahy family relatives. After Mary died we think that very little contact, if any, was kept with her family after my grandfather ,Patrick Leahy , was married again to a Daisy Whelan round about 1924 and therefore know almost nothing about our Kavanagh relations.
In 1952 my father inherited half of the proceeds from the sale of a property at 15 South Anne Street Dublin. This came from the estate of a Michael Kavanagh (Decd) A Miss Anne Kavanagh was also referred to in correspondence re this estate but we are not sure of her relationship to Michael Kavanagh, my grandmother Mary or my dad, Dermot. Indeed we are not really sure of Michael Kavanagh's relationship to my dad and have assumed he was his grandfather but he could possibly have been an uncle or even a cousin!
During the 1960's my family here in Scotland were visited by Kavanaghs who were relations, from Australia, but I remember very little of this event. If any of this story connects with yours and you have any information which could help us trace this side of our family, please get in touch. Many thanks, Kate Walker (Leahy) Fife , Scotland
