I recently had the opportunity to inspect the Family Bible kept by Thomas H. Kealy and Phebe Ann (or Angeline) Hadden Kealy, who were married in Lewisville, Texas on 3 Dec. 1873.
Inserted loosely in the Bible were two badly deteriorated loose-leaf pages that contained vital information about Thomas H. Kealy’s parents, Thomas and Henrietta Kealy, as well as several of their children. The ink is faint on deeply yellowed pages, making them impossible to copy. They might possibly be photographed and electronically enhanced. Until I have the opportunity to experiment with that, I will content myself with simply summarizing what can actually be read or accurately deduced.
Because of the consistency of the hand, ink color, and stroke width in most of the entries, I believe that these pages were recopied at one time from another source. The last entry on the loose pages is dated 1847 (the death of Thomas W. Kealy).
Thomas Kealy (father): birthdate destroyed; date of death not recorded (DOB 1809 from other sources; suspected DOD 1888 from other sources.)
Henrietta M. Kealy (mother; maiden name not stated) b. 14Jan 1813; d. 12 Jun 1872
CHILDREN OF THOMAS AND HENRIETTA:
Marian Kealy, dau: b. 31 Aug 1831; d. 10 XXX 1832 (month obliterated)
Henry Benjamin Kealy, son: b. 2 Aug 1833; d. (date obliterated, but necessarily between 1832 and 1839)
Sarah Mariah Kealy, dau: b. 19 Jul 1835; (known from other sources to have died 20 Jun 1901)
Samuel C. Kealy, son: b. in March (date and year obliterated); d. 13 (?) Dec. 1839
Leonard Kealy, son: b. 15 Dec (year obliterated); d. not recorded
William H. Kealy, son: b. (day and month obliterated) 1842; d. 12 Sept. 1845
Stephen A. Kealy, son: b. 21 Oct 1844; (known from other sources to have died 29 May 1905)
Thomas Wesley Kealy, son: b. 12 Jan 1847; d. 17 Mar 1847
Thomas Herbert Kealy, son: b. 2 May 1849; d. 9 Mar 1917.
What is interesting about this list, apart from the appalling childhood mortality rate, is that it omits John Nicholas Kealy (b. 4 Feb 1837), my greatgrandfather. It also does not list a George Kealy who, according to an internet source, was born in 1840. It is possible, but not chronologically necessary, that George Kealy and Leonard Kealy are the same person.
One of the witnesses at the wedding of Thomas H. and Phebe Ann was J.N. Kealy—presumably John Nicholas, the groom’s brother.
There is also no mention on this list of a Susan M. Kealy born in 1835, although I have seen internet references to such a person. I believe that the internet “Susan” is actually Sarah M. Kealy, born in July of 1835. Her name is spelled with the double “R” in the Bible, but with a single R in other family papers.
CHILDREN OF THOMAS H. AND PHEBE ANN:
Thomas H. and Phebe had two children before Phebe’s death on 9 Feb 1878, a month shy of her 24th birthday.
Henrietta Louisa (“Nettie”) Kealy, dau: b. 12 Sep 1874
Thomas Harvey Kealy, son: b. 2 Aug 1877; d. 19 Apr 1878
Nettie Kealy grew to adulthood and married Thomas L. Casey of Jacksonville, Cherokee Co. Texas, on 12 Aug 1892 or 1895 (both years are recorded). The marriage occurred at the residence of her aunt, S.M. (Kealy) Vanfleet in Lewisville.
