When James Ervin Cearley came to Texas in 1853 the name on his land and tax records was spelled KEARLEY by 1870 the name was spelled CEARLEY.The story handed down was that James was born in North or South Carolina in 1829.When he was about 5 years old the family moved to Georgia.There his father died and his mother remarried.It is not known if she had more children or what her name was.When James was 18 he was working for the Baldwin Locomotive Iron Works in Georgia and there met Nancy Wiley Baldwin, born in Georgia.She was related in some way to the owners.James and Nancy had two children in Georgia.They received a letter from Texas (believed to be from people named (BARNES) telling them of the good land there and asked them to come.They traveled by ox wagon taking six months to complete their journey.James and Nancy had thirteen children.Nancy died in 1891 in Austin, Travis County, Texas.James married Sarah A. POLK (born 1873 died 1949) Sept 1897 and had six children. James died 1915.All children use the CEARLEY spelling.
