This is interesting information.Matthew could be my gg grandfather.I heard that his name was Matthias but it's very close.His son John Kearns (b. 1860)left for the US in the 1890s.Given that John's birth year, Matthias was probably born somewhere around the 1830s.
I had done some reseach and they told me that there was Kearns family in Derrywode, Templetogher in 1901:
Michael Kearns; head; 43 yrs old
Anne Kearns; wife; 42 "
Mary E "; dau; 11 "
John "; son; 9 1/2 "
James " son; 6
Maybe James was your grandfather.
Not sure of the links yet - I see no link to this info and my family - yet.
Hope it helps and maybe we can put the peices to the puzzle together.
By the way, my dad's and brother's name was James so it runs in the family!
