Family of George Washington Keeling of Elbert & Habersham Counties, GA
GEORGE WASHINGTON KEELING was born on 9 Sep 1813 in (almost certainly) Elbert County, GA to Leonard and Elizabeth HAYNES Keeling (see msg #799 for compiled lists of dates and names of their children). He married Elizabeth AYERS on 5 Sep 1841 in Habersham County, GA. After her death he married Cynthia Ann Guest ABT 1844, according to the KGH (see below). He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1858-1860, according to a card in the General Name File at the Georgia Archives. During his term he unsuccessfully proposed forming a new county from Habersham and Franklin Counties, which would become Stephens County in 1905. A story that circulates through the family is that GW was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives after the Civil War, but was refused a seat because he had been a Confederate officer. The State of Georgia Official Register of 1923 (available online from the Georgia Archives) lists all of Georgia's Senators and Representatives from the First Congress until that date, including those denied their seats, and GW was not on that list. He enlisted in Co. H of the 24th Ga. Vol. Inf. during the Civil War and resigned as a Capt. in Aug 1862 due to age (49) and illness. He later enlisted as a Lt. in Co. G 4th Batt'n GA Inf. (State Guards). After the War he moved with his family to Upshur County, TX, arriving in Feb 1870, according to an article in the San Angelo Standard on 20 Jan 1941 that contained an interview of his son Littleton Morgan Keeling. GW and his family are listed in the 1870 Habersham County, GA census on 29 Jul 1870, and a Power of Attorney from GW to Robert M. Ayers in Habersham County, GA dated 8 Nov 1870 likely indicates a departure in late 1870, with an arrival in (Feb) 1871. George Washington Keeling died on 16 Jan 1888 and was buried at Riley Cemetery (AKA County Line Cemetery and Riley's Chapel Cemetery) in Camp County, TX. His grave marker is shown on TXGENES and findagrave.com and a photograph of GW in his Confederate uniform is shown on findagrave.com.
Elizabeth M. AYERS Keeling was born on 17 Apr 1817 in GA to Nathaniel Ayers and Milcah Elizabeth WALTERS and died on 17 Apr 1843, according to the book "Some Ayers and Heirs", where no source was given. She was the sister of Judith Pamela Ayers, the wife of Littleton Madison Keeling (see msg. #1171 on this forum). According to the KGH (see below) they had one child, Clark Monroe Keeling.
Cynthia Ann GUEST Keeling was born on 13 Aug 1820 in GA to Sanford Guest and Elizabeth ADDISON, died on 26 Aug 1899, and was buried at Riley Cemetery. Her grave marker shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES spells her name Cyntha. They had 11 children, according to the KGH, the LMK letter, and the MJKB document (see below). Altogether GW's twelve children were:

I regret that my tables of dates above and below were mangled by GenForum's software - extra spaces are deleted and a variable-width font is standard, making a neat tabular arrangement impossible. Family names listed in caps in the tables are women's married names. Any information in angle brackets ("<...>", here or below) is from Internet or other sources that are difficult or impossible to confirm using documents. This device allows one to judge which information is fairly solid, although most information passed down through a family is expected to be reasonably accurate, even though the original sources (such as a family bible) may have been lost. The Upshur County, TX birth index (denoted UCBI) has been very useful, but has 3 extremely odd entries. Three Keeling female entries for date of birth were followed with a date of birth entry exactly one year later, together with a name change. One of these is clearly not correct. To save space I have used the abbreviation SSDI for the Social Security Death Index, UCMI for the online Upshur County Marriage Index [http://countyofupshur.com:8000/search.aspx?cabinet=marriage], TDI for the Texas Death Index, LMK for a family letter written by Littleton Morgan Keeling to D. P. Keeling of Hearne, TX in 1933, and KGH for the "Keeling Genealogy and History," a two-page typed document written by Ollie Buchanan GAGE and containing information told to her by her mother, Lucy Jane Keeling BUCHANAN. It was written long after her mother died, and some of the older material is dubious. A related document written by Mary Jo Keeling Barton (denoted MJKB) is a combination of material from KGH and information it states is copied from the George Washington Keeling bible. Special thanks is due to Bette Holcomb and the Pittsburg/Camp County [TX] Public Library for copying obituaries from the Pittsburg Gazette. Many grave markers were displayed at http://www.txgenes.com/TxUpshur/CemeteryIndex.htmlhttp://www.txgenes.com/TxUpshur/CemeteryIndex.html, which we denoted TXGENES, but that web site has changed and I have not relocated those photographs, although the information on them can be found on the The Wayback Machine. Note also that Arkansas has a 50-year exclusion period for obtaining copies of death certificates, while in Texas that period is 25 years. Marriages listed by county refer to the county in which the license was issued, not necessarily where the ceremony was performed, if that information is even available. Each of the 12 children in the table above is numbered and listed below in caps, followed by the grandchildren in a table, followed by detailed listings for the grandchildren. These 12 children of George Washington Keeling were followed by 64 known grandchildren.
(1) CLARK MONROE KEELING was born in GA on 16 Jun 1842 (according to MJKB) or 23 Jun 1842 (according to LMK), and died between 1870 and 1880 (probably ABT 1873 - see Joanna below). He married Susan SCOTT [ABT 1841; AFT 1880] ABT 1860; her maiden name comes from the death certificates of their children. Many Keelings married Scotts from Franklin County, GA [see message #837 on this forum]. Possible parents for Susan were Joel and Vesta SMITH Scott (originally from Franklin County), who lived very close to Susan in 1880. Joel's family had an 8-year-old daughter named Lurana (possibly) or Susana (more likely - thanks, Keri!) in the 1850 census. If it is Susana then Joel and Vesta are likely the parents of Susan, and Clark and Susan's daughter Vesta was named for her grandmother Vesta SCOTT. Clark and Susan lived in Polk County, GA in 1860 and in 1870. Susan was living in Polk County in 1880 and was listed as a widow in that census. Clark served in Co. D 20th Ga. Vol. Inf. from 1861 until his surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865. Both were members of the Van Wert Baptist Church in Polk County GA (as were the Scotts) and are mentioned in church minutes that exist for that period.
The children of Clark Monroe Keeling and Susan SCOTT Keeling were:
Robert Jeptha Clark4 Jun 186430 Dec 1945
Vesta TallulahABT 1867BEF 1905
George C.13 Nov 186810 Jun 1947
Joanna M. MOODY1 Jan 187310 Dec 1945
An interesting story developed with Clark's children, and is present in the land records of Upshur County, TX (thanks, Loretta and Windell!). GW's last will and testament states that the residue of his real estate is "to be divided in equal shares among MY CHILDREN AND THE HEIRS OF THEIR BODIES" (my emphasis). This clearly would include Clark's children. However, on 18 Jan 1905 the following power of attorney was filed in Upshur County:
"R. C. Keeling of Polk Co., AR, G. C. Keeling of Roger Mills County, OK, J. M. Moody (nee Keeling) and husband E. L. Moody of Pickens Co., GA are the children of C. M. Keeling, dec'd and the grandchildren of G. W. Keeling, dec'd, and appoint H. H. Loden and Albert Maberry their attorneys. Said attorneys are residents of Upshur Co., TX and are empowered to sue for any land, property, or money to which they are entitled. Said attorneys to get 1/3 as fees."
Apparently those children were not (or more likely could not be) notified of GW's death. I have not learned the consequences of this effort. Note that Vesta is not on the list of names.
Robert Jeptha Clark Keeling was born on 4 Jun 1864 in Rome, GA, and died on 30 Dec 1945 in Waco, McLennan, TX, and is buried at Moore Cemetery near Chalk Bluff in McLennan County, according to his death certificate and obituary in the Waco Times-Herald. His first middle name comes from a great-granddaughter who heard his complete name many times from her grandmother, Katie Keeling HANSON. His grave marker shown on findagrave.com has 1845 as the year of birth. He married Alta Bennett MOODY [22 Jan 1874 - 20 Mar 1933; buried Moore] on 4 Sep 1892 in Polk County, GA. Her grave marker shown on findagrave.com spells her first name Altah.
Vesta Tallulah Keeling was born ABT 1867 in GA and died AFT 1880 and BEF 1905. She was listed as Vesty T. [3] in 1870 and as Lula [13] in 1880. If these census listings are accurate, it is fairly likely that her name was Vesta Tallulah, called "Lula." Tallulah is a very uncommon name outside Georgia, but is rather more common in Georgia. Tallulah Falls, GA is a scenic area close to where Clark was born. I have been unable to find her after 1880. Vesta Scott lived very close to the Keelings and attended the same church as Clark and Susan, and Vesty may have been named for her (see above). Vesta Keeling was not part of the legal proceedings by her siblings in Upshur County, TX, and was presumably dead by that time, although there is no direct evidence of this.
George C. Keeling was born on 13 Nov 1868 in Rockmart, Polk County, GA, died on 10 Jun 1947 in Lincoln, Placer County, CA, and was buried there at Lincoln Cemetery, according to his Placer County death certificate and Lincoln News-Messenger obituary. He married Frances F. "Fannie" JOHNSON [19 Oct 1871 - 28 Mar 1947; buried Lincoln] on 21 Oct 1888 in Polk County, GA.
Joanna M. Keeling was born on 1 Jan 1873 in Rockmart, Polk County, GA, died on 10 Dec 1945 in San Angelo, Tom Green County, TX, and was buried at Restland Cemetery in Coryell County, TX, according to her death certificate and obituary in the Gatesville [TX] Messenger and Star Forum. She married Edward Lee MOODY [27 Dec 1866 - 6 Jun 1933; buried Westview in Moultrie, GA] on 15 Sep 1887, with the latter date taken from her obituary. His grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.
(2) ELIZABETH MALONIA "BETSY" KEELING was born on 23 Oct 1846 in Habersham County, GA (according to KGH and LMK), died on 4 Dec 1930 in Camp County, TX and is buried at the Riley Cemetery in Camp County, according to her death certificate and grave marker (shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES). The latter sources list the day of birth as 14 Oct. She first married William Van Buren DAVIS [ABT 1841 - Dec 1872 in Habersham] on 31 Jul 1861 in Habersham County, GA. His date and place of death come from Elizabeth's Texas Confederate widow's pension application. According to the KGH Van Davis (who served in Co. I 34th Ga. Vol. Inf.) suffered a serious lung wound in the Civil War that ultimately led to his death. Elizabeth is listed in the Ga. Salt Records in Habersham County during that period. She married John RILEY [13 Sep 1833 in Liverpool, England - 24 Aug 1906; buried Riley] on 20 Jan 1876 in Camp County, TX. His grave marker is shown on TXGENES and findagrave.com.
The 1900 and 1910 censuses stated that 7 of her 11 children were alive; the first three were the children of Van Davis. Her children were:

Lenora Davis was born ABT 1866 in GA, was in the 1870 census and very likely died before the 1880 census (where she wasn't listed). Nothing more is known.
Alpha Tallulah Davis was born in Jun 1868 (according to the 1900 census) in GA, and died between 1910 and late 1914. Her middle name is listed as Tullie on the death certificate of her son Thomas Henry COLLEY. A granddaughter heard both of Alpha's names many times from her mother, whose parents were dead when she married (in late 1916 in OK). Another granddaughter was told by an aunt that Alpha died before the granddaughter's mother was age 14, which would be in late 1914. Alpha married James Thomas COLLEY [Mar 1866 - BEF 1917] on 4 Apr 1885 in Camp County, TX.
Mary Ollie Davis was born on 17 May 1870 in KS, died on 23 Jul 1954 in Linden, Cass County, TX, and was buried at Bear Creek Cemetery in Cass County, TX, according to her death certificate. She married Robert Morgan MILLER [13 Mar 1868 - 18 May 1952; buried Bear Creek] on 17 Sep 1891 in Camp County, TX. Elizabeth and Van Davis lived briefly in Leavenworth County, KS and are listed there in the 1870 census (under the family name VANDAVIS). Her grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.
John Morgan Riley was born on 4 Mar 1878 in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX, died on 21 Jun 1948 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, LA, and was buried at Riley Cemetery in Camp County, TX, according to his death certificate and the cemetery listing. He married Rebecca Jane "Beckie" COUCH [6 Aug 1881 - 10 Nov 1932; buried Riley] on 9 Dec 1900 in Camp County, TX. Their joint grave marker is shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES.
Cynthia Elizabeth "Sis" Riley was born on 28 Jan 1880 in TX, died on 30 Apr 1975 in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX, and was buried at Riley Cemetery, according to her death certificate and grave marker shown on TXGENES. Her full middle name is contained in the DAR application of a grandniece. She married William H. HELMS [Jun 1869 - 1910-1920] on 24 Dec 1895 in Camp County, TX and later divorced (listed as such in the 1910 census and as a widow in the 1920 census). She married William Harrison PITTS [11 Jan 1877 - 30 Aug 1950; buried Rose Hill] on 10 Feb 1925 in Camp County and later divorced, according to his death certificate. His obituary from the Pittsburg Gazette is online in the Camp County Obituary Collection of the Texas A & M University-Commerce Library. His WWI draft card lists his year of birth as 1877, while his WWII draft card lists 1878. She married Sidney Lee CREWS [16 Dec 1881 - 3 Mar 1972; buried Meadowbrook Gardens] in Miller County, AR on 17 Feb 1951. Several different years for his birth (including 1877 and 1879) are listed in different records, but he was not enumerated in his parents' 1880 census listing. Her SSDI record has the CREWS name, while her death certificate and grave marker have the PITTS name.
Sanford Edward Riley was born on 9 Mar 1882 in Camp County, TX, died on 8 Nov 1945 in Camp County, TX, and was buried at Riley Cemetery, according to his death certificate and WWII draft card. He married Ada Francis BULLARD [30 Nov 1880 - 18 Jan 1969; buried Riley] on 24 Jul 1904 in Camp County, TX. Their joint grave marker is show on TXGENES and findagrave.com. The spelling of her middle name is that on her death certificate.
George Wesley Riley was born on 15 Aug 1883 in TX, died on 2 Oct 1916, and is buried at Riley Cemetery, according to his grave marker shown on TXGENES and findagrave.com. No death certificate was found. His middle name comes from the DAR application of a granddaughter. He married Lenora "Nora" BULLARD [21 Mar 1885 - 17 Apr 1964; buried Mount Olive in Healdton, Carter, OK] on 24 Jul 1904 in Camp County, TX. She later married John Douglas ATCHLEY. Nora and Ada (above) were sisters.
Alexander Cleveland Riley was born on 7 Dec 1884 in Upshur County, TX, died on 6 Dec 1974 in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX, and was buried at Riley Cemetery, according to his death certificate and WWII draft card. He married Maggie M. CHASTAIN [10 May 1892 - 14 Aug 1984; buried Riley] on 26 Dec 1909 in Morris County, TX.
Three unknown children were born and died BEF 1900, according to the 1900 census for Elizabeth Malonia KEELING Riley. Nothing else is known.
(3) LEONARD SANFORD KEELING (called Sanford) was born on 16 May 1848 in GA, died on 1 Aug 1887 in Toccoa, Habersham County, GA, and was buried at Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Stephens County, GA (grave marker shown on findagrave.com). The LMK letter lists his day of birth as 1 May 1848, while the MJB document has 11 May 1848, his grave marker has 16 May 1849, and his obituary in the Franklin County [GA] Register lists 16 May 1848. The marker year contradicts all other sources (including census). His obituary in the Atlanta Constitution states that he died at home in Toccoa. Although he is listed in the book "Roster of Confederate Graves," no military records were found. He married Emily HAYES [1 Jul 1851 - 31 Mar 1934; Liberty Hill] on 21 Sep 1870 in Franklin County, GA. They had no children. She later married Tom WILLIFORD. In 1870 Sanford and Emily moved to Upshur County TX and were there in 1872, according to an Addison/Taylor family letter written in that year (thanks, Lenora!). They were back in Franklin County, GA by 1880.
(4) LUCY JANE KEELING was born on 1 Jan 1851 in Habersham County, GA, died on 9 Feb 1930 in Pritchett, Upshur County, TX, and was buried there at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, according to her death certificate, the cemetery listing, and her Texas Confederate widow's pension file. She married James Wesley BUCHANAN [24 Nov 1843 - 14 Jul 1923; Pleasant Hill] on 23 Dec 1866 in Habersham County, GA. Their grave markers are shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES. During the Civil War he served in Co. I 34th Ga. Vol. Inf.
Two comprehensive lists exist of the Buchanan children, one placed on the Internet by Bertha Tyson (and undoubtedly taken from a bible), and the other provided by the James Wallace Buchanan family from a bible (thanks, June!). They are nearly identical, and full names will be taken from these lists. The 1900 census stated that 11 of the couple's 15 children were alive, while the 1910 census stated 10 of 15. The 15 children of James Wesley Buchanan and Lucy Jane KEELING Buchanan were:

Cynthia Ellen Buchanan was born on 29 Aug 1867 in GA and died on
Nancy Adeline Buchanan was born on 13 Jun 1869 in GA, died on 20 Oct 1890 in (likely) TX, and was buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Upshur County, TX, according to the cemetery listing on TXGENES. She married John PRICE [25 May 1865 - 6 Apr 1932; buried Mt. Hope Cemetery in Chicago, Cook, IL] on 21 Nov 1889 in Upshur County, TX. After her death he married Allen Beatrice GALLMAN on 5 Dec 1895 in Upshur County, TX. His Cook County, IL death certificate states that he was born in Pritchett, Upshur County, TX.
Samuel Washington Buchanan was born on 9 Oct 1871 in Upshur County, TX, died on 23 Jul 1962 in Georgetown, Williamson County, TX, and was buried at Lawler Cemetery in Florence, TX, according to his death certificate. He married Sallie Elizabeth [or
Rhoda A. Elizabeth Buchanan was born on 11 Dec 1872 in TX, died on 2 May 1939 in Jarrell, Williamson County, TX, and was buried there at Land Cemetery, according to her death certificate. The 1880 census lists her name as Rhoda A. E. and the 1900 census as Rhoda A. A grandson provided the name Elizabeth. She married Albert Isaac HICKMAN [3 Sep 1868 - 9 Apr 1948; buried Land] on 2 Jul 1893 in Williamson County, TX. Their shared grave marker is shown on findagrave.com, which shows his date of death as 2 Apr, which contradicts his death certificate.
William Burgess Buchanan was born on 11 Feb 1875, died on 21 Oct 1876 (both undoubtedly in TX), and is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Upshur County, TX, according to the cemetery listings. The Wallace Buchanan list spells the middle name Burgus. Nothing else is known.
James Monroe Buchanan was born on 28 Dec 1876 in TX (according to his WWI draft card), died on 28 Jan 1925 in Jarrell, Williamson County, TX, and was buried there at Lawler Cemetery, according to his death certificate. His grave marker shown on findagrave.com lists his day of birth as 27 Dec, and his day of death as 25 Jan. He married Fannie OWENS [BEF 1900 - BEF 1900] on 7 May 1897 in Williamson County. He was listed in his parents' household in the 1900 census as a widower. He married Letha LEWIS [29 Jul 1880 - 6 Jan 1948; buried Copperas Cove] on 5 Nov 1905 in Williamson County. Several years-of-birth have been given for her. Census listings are all consistent with 1879, but she was not present in the 1880 census listing for her parents. Her death certificate lists 1881, but given the census listings I have chosen 1880 as most likely.
Mary Eliza Buchanan was born on 30 Aug 1878 in Upshur County, TX, died on 4 Jul 1958 in Denver City, Yoakum County, TX, and was buried at Rule Cemetery in Haskell County, TX, according to her death certificate. Her middle name is given as Eliza in the two transcribed Buchanan bible records, and on the birth certificate of her daughter Allzena Mae, while the death certificate has Ellen. She married Allen Daniel SINGLETON [19 Jan 1878 - 22 May 1943; buried Rule] on 6 Sep 1900 in Williamson County, TX. Their joint grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.
John Riley Buchanan was born on 21 Jan 1880 in Upshur County, TX, died on 10 May 1967 in Temple, Bell County, TX, and was buried at Florence City Cemetery in Williamson County, TX, according to his death certificate. He married Bettie Brunette ADAMS [12 Jul 1887 - 11 May 1974; buried Florence City] on 2 Jun 1912 in Williamson County, TX. Their joint grave marker is shown on findagrave.com. Her middle name has been spelled Burnette, but is Brunette on John's WWI draft card and her death certificate.
Phillip Haynes Buchanan was born on 30 Dec 1881 in Pritchett, Upshur County. TX, died on 25 Jun 1974 in Midland, Midland County, TX, and is buried at Restland Cemetery in Pecos County, TX, according to his death certificate. The spelling of his first name follows his signature on his WWII draft card, while his WWI draft card has Philip. He married Irene Frances WHITE [25 Oct 1889 - 25 Dec 1924; buried Berrys Creek in Williamson County] on 15 Dec 1909 in Williamson County, TX. Her Williamson County, TX death certificate gives her date of birth as 25 Oct 1889, while her grave marker gives 4 May 1888; the former is in better agreement with census records. Both of their grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
Florida Estella Virginia Buchanan was born on 22 Oct 1883 in TX, died on 10 Nov 1885 in TX, and was buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Upshur County, TX, according to the cemetery listing on TXGENES. Her full name was taken from the two bible lists, which do not have the exact day of death in Nov 1885.
A baby boy was born and died on 5 Nov 1885 in TX, and was buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Upshur County, TX, according to the cemetery listing on TXGENES. The bible lists do not have the day of death in Nov 1885. Nothing else is known.
Gertie Chloe Buchanan was born on 27 Apr 1887 in Pritchett, Upshur County, TX, died on 21 Jan 1977 in Williamson County, TX, and is buried there at Patrick Cemetery, according to her death certificate and the SSDI. Her death certificate is not on file in Austin, TX, but a copy is located at the Williamson County Clerk office. She married Alma Reasin HAMILTON [19 Sep 1894 - 16 Mar 1960; buried Patrick] on 4 Feb 1913 in Williamson County, TX. The spelling of his middle name is that on his WWII draft card, while his WWI card has: Reson. A handwritten "Family Register" appears on the back of a son's Williamson County, TX birth certificate, presumably written by the informant, Gertie. It lists Reasin as the middle name. Their joint grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.
Olivia Velore Buchanan was born on 12 Jan 1889 in Pritchett, Upshur County, TX, died on 21 Apr 1974 in Georgetown, Williamson County, TX, and is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Upshur County, TX, according to her death certificate. She married David Ferdinand GAGE [24 Feb 1889 - 19 Nov 1956; buried Pleasant Hill] on 10 Jul 1930 in Upshur County, TX. Their joint grave marker is shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES. His marker, death certificate, andWWII draft card list his first name as Dee, but earlier records list David.
Wallace NMN Buchanan was born on 27 Sep 1890 in Pritchett, Upshur County, TX, died on 25 Apr 1987 in Upshur County, TX, and is buried there at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, according to the online Upshur County birth records, the Texas death index, and his grave marker. Although his WWI draft card lists his year of birth as 1891 in Pritchett, TX, the online Upshur County birth index, his WWII draft card, the transcribed Buchanan bible records, and all other records list 1890. He married Vera Mae CHILDERS (listed as CHILDRESS in the marriage record) [1 Oct 1906 - 30 Nov 1998; buried Pleasant Hill] on 30 May 1926 in Upshur County. Both grave markers are shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES. Wallace served in WWI.
Savannah Buchanan was born on 24 Aug 1892 in TX, died on 8 Jan 1983 in Austin, Travis County, TX, and is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Upshur County, TX, according to her death certificate, the transcribed Buchanan bible records, and her grave marker. She married Richard Watson MABERRY [27 Mar 1876 - 13 Feb 1940; buried Pleasant Hill] on 2 Oct 1922 in Upshur County. Their grave markers are shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES.
(5)MARY URSLEY KEELING was born on 18 Nov 1852 and died ABT 1853, according to KGH, MJKB, and LMK. Nothing else is known.
(6)WILLIAM ACIE KEELING was born on 3 Oct 1854, died on 28 Aug 1877, and is buried at Riley Cemetery in Camp County, TX (grave marker shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES). The middle name is given in MJKB. The LMK letter has the month of birth as Sep, unlike the grave marker and MJKB. According to the KGH he was single.
(7)ANN ELIZA "ANNIE" KEELING was born on 29 Oct 1856 in GA, died on 25 Jul 1929 in Lafayette, Upshur County, TX, and was buried there at Lafayette Cemetery, according to her death certificate, her obituary in the Pittsburg [TX] Gazette, and the grave marker shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES. She married James Henry Lee WESLEY [4 Jun 1849 - 9 Apr 1886; buried Rock Chapel Historic Cemetery] on 10 Dec 1873 in Upshur County, TX, according to the UCMI. His full name is from the death certificate of their daughter Ada. Rock Chapel is in Lithonia, DeKalb County, GA; his grave marker is shown on findagrave.com. Ann married James Franklin TAYLOR [15 Jan 1845 - 27 Mar 1926; buried Lafayette] on 15 Nov 1892 in Upshur County, TX, according to her Texas Confederate widow's pension. He served in Co. F 27th Tenn. Vol. Inf. during the Civil War. His grave marker is shown on TXGENES and findagrave.com, and an extensive obituary exists in the Pittsburg Gazette.
The 1900 and 1910 censuses stated that 6 of 6 children were alive. Three of these children were from each marriage. Those children were:
Ada Annie SMITH MORRIS19 Feb 187511 Jul 1964
George Marvin12 Sep 187820 Dec 1929
Flora MOODY17 Jul 188218 Dec 1935

Ada Annie Wesley was born on 19 Feb 1875 in GA, died on 11 Jul 1964 in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX, and was buried at Leesburg Cemetery in Camp County, according to her death certificate. She married Elijah Frank SMITH [22 Feb 1863 - 10 Jun 1902; buried Lafayette] on 15 Nov 1891 in Camp County. She then married William Luther MORRIS [22 Sep 1862 - 14 Nov 1942; buried Leesburg] on 17 May 1903 in Camp County. His death certificate lists his year of birth as 1861. Their joint grave marker is shown on findagrave.com. That of Elijah Smith in Upshur County, TX is shown on both findagrave.com and TXGENES.
George Marvin Wesley was born on 12 Sep 1878 (according to his WWI draft card) in
Flora Wesley was born on 17 Jun 1882 in Lithonia, DeKalb County, GA (spelled Latonia in the DC), died on 18 Dec 1935 in Gladewater, Gregg County, TX, and was buried there at Rosedale Cemetery, according to her death certificate. The date of birth is listed as 17 Jul 1882 on her DC, but the 1900 census lists Jun 1881 and her grave marker (shown on findagrave.com) lists it as 17 Jun 1882. Other census listings are more consistent with 1882. The best guess is therefore 17 Jun 1882. She married Newton Benjamin MOODY [6 Feb 1881 - 22 Jun 1962; buried Mings Cemetery (Upshur)] on 30 Dec 1900 in Camp County, TX. His grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.
Opal Judson Taylor was born on 18 Jul 1894 in TX, died on 22 Jan 1986 in San Jose, Santa Clara County, CA, and was buried at Crestview Cemetery in Wichita Falls, Wichita, TX, according to her death certificate. She married Homer Searl PANKHURST [31 Mar 1895 - 8 Mar 1974; buried Crestview] on 30 Jan 1921 in Camp County, TX. He served in the U.S. Marines in WWI.
Ruth Ada Taylor was born on 29 Aug 1896 in TX, died ABT 25 Jun 1973, and is buried at Chapelwood Cemetery in Texarkana, Bowie County, TX, according to the SSDI and the cemetery records. The latter records do not give the day of death, but list 27 June as the day of interment. No TX death certificate or obituary were located, and it is possible that she died in nearby AR, which has a 50-year restriction on death certificates. Her middle name was listed on her husband's WWI draft card. She married Elmer Lofton DUKE [24 Mar 1897 - 18 Nov 1982; buried Chapelwood] on 26 Dec 1917 in Upshur County, TX.
Grace Lee Taylor was born on 15 Mar 1898 in TX, died on 29 Sep 1987 in Dallas, Dallas County, TX, and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX, according to the SSDI, the TX death index, and findagrave.com. She married James Otis MOODY [21 Apr 1897 - 25 Jan 1972; buried Rose Hill] on 23 Nov 1919 in Upshur County, TX. He was a WWI veteran.
(8)LITTLETON MORGAN KEELING (called Morgan) was born on 20 Jan 1859 in Habersham County, GA, died on 27 Dec 1953 in San Angelo, Tom Green County, TX, and was buried at Miles Cemetery in Runnels County, TX, according to his death certificate. He married Tillida Cornelia "Lida" WILLIAMS [22 Jan 1870 - 21 Aug 1927; buried Miles] on 31 Oct 1886 in Williamson County, TX. The spelling of her first name comes from a copy of her father's family bible (unseen by me). Their joint grave marker is shown on findagrave.com. The article in the San Angelo Standard on 20 Jan 1941 states that the family moved to Williamson County in 1891, while the KGH states Dec 1890.
The 1900 census stated that all 7 of their children were alive, while in 1910 all 11 were alive. The San Angelo Standard article states that 9 of these children were alive in 1942. The children of Littleton Morgan Keeling and Tillida Cornelia WILLIAMS Keeling were:

She married Thomas Garland BROWN [26 Jun 1889 - 6 Mar 1986; buried Morton Memorial (Cochran)] on 1 Aug 1909 in Bell County TX. Her grave marker is shown on findagrave.com. Her middle name comes from a family list of the children of Morgan and Lida Keeling.
Jessie May Keeling was born on 28 Dec 1893 in Williamson County, TX, died on 21 May 1914 in El Paso, El Paso County, TX, and was buried at Corn Hill Cemetery in Jarrell, Williamson County, TX, according to her death certificate and cemetery records. She married Arthur Lee LONG [2 Jun 1891 - 8 Mar 1978; Sunset Memorial Park (Nacogdoches)] on 16 Jan 1911 in Bell County, TX. She married William Banks "Bud" UNDERWOOD [7 Aug 1885 - 24 Feb 1974; buried Reeds Lake] on 14 Sep 1922 in Bell County, TX. Their grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
Forest Hubert "Jack" Keeling was born on 8 Jul 1901 in Jarrell, Williamson County, TX, died on 16 Jan 1991 in Coryell County, TX, and was buried there at Restland Cemetery in Gatesville, TX, according to the SSDI and his Gatesville [TX] Messenger & Star Telegram obituary. He married Thelma Arminta HATLEY [13 Mar 1902 - 28 Sep 1982; buried Center Cemetery (Lometa, Lampasas, TX)] on 21 May 1921 in Bell County, TX. He next married Ruby Lee MOSS [16 Sep 1902 - 18 Jul 1978; buried Brookside Cemetery (Houston)] in <1961>. Ruby had been previously married to Frank Alfred GREER. Their grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
Charles Herbert Keeling was born on 2 Mar 1903 in TX, died on 1 Jun 1988 in Travis County, TX, and is buried there at Forest Oaks Memorial Park in Austin, according to the SSDI, TDI, and cemetery records. He married Lorene MESSER [ABT 1906 - 15 Sep 1986; buried Forest Park Lawndale (Harris County)] ABT 9 Sep 1922 in Bell County TX. The marriage license was issued on that date, but was not returned, and the actual date of the ceremony is not known. Her place of burial was provided by their son. Charles then married Opal Myrtle TATUM Boyd [5 Dec 1916 - 3 Sep 2008; buried Forest Oaks Memorial Park] on 12 Nov 1960 in Temple, TX with a Williamson County, TX license. They divorced in Travis County on 14 Sep 1961 and remarried on 25 Jan 1965 in Blanco, TX with a Hays County, TX marriage license, according to a daughter.
Armond Jordan "Jay" Keeling was born on 21 Apr 1905 in Corn Hill, Williamson County, TX (according to Williamson County birth records), died on 27 Jun 1973 in San Angelo, Tom Green County, TX, and is buried at Miles Cemetery in Runnels County, TX, according to his death certificate. He married Leona MARTIN [31 May 1907 - 14 Jun 1985; buried Miles] on 30 Jun 1926 in Runnels County, TX.
Gladys Laverne Keeling was born on 14 Oct 1907 in Corn Hill, Williamson County, TX (according to Williamson County birth records), died on 13 Dec 1992 in Tom Green County, TX (according to the SSDI and TDI), and was buried at Miles Cemetery in Runnels County, TX. She married John David HOGAN [19 Nov 1900 - 3 Nov 1950; buried Miles] on 2 May 1924 in Bell County, TX. He was a WWI veteran, and his grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.
(8)CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS KEELING was born on 2 Mar 1861 in GA, died on 13 Apr 1877, and was buried at Riley Cemetery in Camp County, TX. His grave marker is shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES. His full name and dates are given in KGH, MJKB, and LMK. He was called Columbus. The KGH document states that "Columbus died before coming to Texas." Given his date of birth and the grave marker, this is very dubious.
(10)CYNTHIA LAVICA KEELING was born on 5 Nov 1863 in GA, died on 24 Jun 1903, and was buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Camp County, TX, according to MJBK and LMK, and the grave marker (that lists the birth year as 1864, which disagrees with census information). A brief obituary exists in the Pittsburg Gazette. She married Phillip Montgomery MONTS [1 May 1857 - 17 Apr 1934; buried Pleasant Grove] on 13 Jun 1881 in Franklin County, TX. He later married Dovie Belle GADDIS. His middle name is from the obituary of their daughter, Grace Lee STARKS. All grave markers are shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES.
The 1900 census stated that 2 of their 3 children were alive. The children of Phillip Montgomery Monts and Cynthia Lavica KEELING Monts were:

Anna V. GADDIS20 May 188823 Dec 1972
unknownBEF 1900BEF 1900
Hunter NMN Monts was born on 6 Dec 1885 in Upshur County, TX, died on 18 Aug 1967 in Gilmer, Upshur County, TX, and was buried there at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, according to his death certificate and WWII draft card. He married Lula Jeanette GADDIS [7 Apr 1895 - 20 Nov 1968; buried Pleasant Grove] on 12 Dec 1911 in Corsicana, Navarro County, TX, according to his Gilmer Mirror obituary. Their shared grave marker is shown on findagrave.com. That marker gives his day of birth as 12 Dec, which contradicts all other records.
Anna Vera Monts was born on 20 May 1888 in Upshur County, TX (according to Upshur County birth records and the SSDI), died on 23 Dec 1972 in DeQueen, Sevier County, AR, and is buried at Broken Bow Cemetery in Broken Bow, McCurtain County, OK, according to her obituary in the Broken Bow News. She married James Mathews GADDIS [26 Aug 1880 - 22 Oct 1957; buried Broken Bow] on 14 May 1904 in Titus County, TX. Their grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
An unknown child was born and died BEF 1900, according to the 1900 census for Cynthia Lavica KEELING Monts. Nothing else is known.
(11)GEORGE WASHINGTON KEELING was born on 15 Aug 1866 in GA, died on 17 Dec 1921 in Camp County, TX, and was buried there at Rose Hill Cemetery in Camp County, TX, according to his Pittsburg [TX] Gazette and Fort Worth Star Telegram obituaries, his Masonic funeral record, KGH, and MJKB. He married Helen Nannie FREEMAN [<21> Dec 1867 - 1924; buried Rose Hill] on 28 Jan 1886 in Upshur County, TX. Her middle name was listed by a granddaughter in the book "Camp County Customs and Characters." Both grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
The 1910 census stated that all 6 of their children were alive. The children of George Washington Keeling and Helen Nannie FREEMAN Keeling were:

Hardy Hopson Keeling was born on 26 Nov 1886 in Lafayette, Upshur County, TX, died on 9 Sep 1968 in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX, and is buried there at Rose Hill Cemetery, according to his death certificate and Pittsburg [TX] Gazette obituary. He married Era Bell SIMS [31 Jan 1893 - 24 Aug 1987; buriedRose Hill] on 6 Jan 1914 in Camp County, TX. His middle name and place of birth are listed in his WWI draft card, and both of their middle names in his WWII draft card. Both grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
William David Keeling was born on 6 Nov 1888 in Lafayette, Upshur County, TX, died on 9 Feb 1967 in Mt. Pleasant, Titus County, TX, and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX, according to his death certificate, obituary, and WWI draft card. His WWII draft card states that he was born in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX. He married Lura J. WILLIAMS [25 Jun 1894 - 12 Aug 1950; buried Rose Hill] on 21 Nov 1915 in Camp County, TX. Both grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
Dora Viola Keeling was born on 11 May 1895 in TX, died on 29 Jan 1988 in Tyler, Smith County, TX, and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX, according to her Pittsburg [TX] Gazette obituary. The date of death listed in the SSDI is incorrect. She was called "Aunt Bo" by one niece and listed as Dora Viola by another in their entries in the book "Camp County Customs and Characters." She married B.(only) D.(only) FISHER [20 Mar 1883 - 10 Apr 1963; buried Rose Hill] on 2 Jul 1926 in Camp County, TX. His WWII draft card records that his initials are his complete given names. Both grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
Lydia Rebecca "Beebe" Keeling was born on 4 Feb 1899 in TX, died on 28 May 1979 in Quitman, Wood County, TX, and is buried at Cedars Memorial Gardens in Mineola, Wood County, TX, according to her death certificate. She married Leonard Everett SCOTT [18 Oct 1899 - 19 Dec 1986; buried Mineola] on 27 Jul 1918 in Dallas County, TX. Their grave markers are shown on findagrave.com. Internet accounts list the marriage day as 3 Jul, which contradicts a Dallas County marriage index from the Dallas Library.
G.
Horace William "Rooster" Keeling was born on 16 Jul 1907 in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX, died on 23 Dec 1988 in Tyler, Smith County, TX, and was buried at Edom Cemetery in Edom, Van Zandt County, TX, according to his Pittsburg Gazette obituary, the Camp County Probate birth index, and the SSDI. He married Ruth Virginia BIVINS [6 Aug 1912 - 28 Apr 1951; buried Tehuacana Cemetery (Limestone)] on 12 May 1929 in Camp County, TX (birth and death dates highly likely, but unproven), Irma LaVerne CLOUD [2 Jan 1911 - 26 Jan 1996] on 18 Apr 1936 in Camp County (she had been previously married to Morris BARNES; birth and death dates highly likely, but unproven), and Estelle JONES [ALIVE] on 13 May 1939 in Athens, Henderson County, TX (She had been previously married to Wayne GANDY).
(12)POSEY ALEXANDER KEELING was born on 3 Mar 1869 in GA, died on 18 Jun 1917 in Lafayette, TX, and was buried at Lafayette Cemetery in Upshur County, TX, according to his grave marker and the ALLEN bible (which I have not seen), as well as KGH and MJKB and his Pittsburg [TX] Gazette obituary. He married Mary Etta "Mettie" ALLEN [14 Dec 1870 - 20 Mar 1930; buried Lafayette] on 9 Dec 1891 in Camp County, TX. Their grave markers are shown on findagrave.com and TXGENES.
The 1910 census stated that all 7 of their children were alive. The children of Posey Alexander Keeling and Mary Etta ALLEN Keeling were:

Roy Littleton Keeling was born on 27 Sep 1893 in Lafayette, Upshur County, TX (according to the ALLEN bible), died on 27 Jul 1955 in Gilmer, Upshur County, TX, and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Pittsburg, Camp County, TX, according to his death certificate. He married Era May "Birdie" HULL [6 Mar 1905 - 18 Jun 2003; buried Rose Hill] on 14 Aug 1921 in Titus County, TX (the ALLEN bible states the ceremony took place in Pittsburg). He was a WWI veteran. Their grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
Lawrence Fredrick "Lonnie" Keeling was born on 13 Apr 1896 in Lafayette, Upshur County, TX, died on 9 Dec 1977 in Lewisville, Denton County, TX, and was buried at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas, Dallas County, TX, according to his death certificate and WWI draft card. A (delayed) Upshur County Probate Court birth certificate exists. He married Cora Dee COPE [11 Jan 1898 - 13 Aug 1943; buried Pleasant Hill in Upshur] on <1 Aug 1918>. Both grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
Odye Hester Keeling was born on 7 Oct 1899 in Upshur County, TX, died on 27 Jan 1989 in Tarrant County, TX, and was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Upshur County, TX, according to the SSDI, TDI, Upshur County birth records, and the cemetery records. She married Erwin Lee HONEYCUTT [7 Sep 1902 - 1938; buried Big Sandy Cemetery] on 27 Mar 1920 in Upshur County, TX, and then married Loyd E. PATTERSON [7 Jul 1902 - 29 Apr 1985; buried Oak Hill] on 29 Apr 1927 in Upshur County. Their joint grave marker is shown on findagrave.com, which incorrectly lists her year of birth as 1900, since she is listed in the 1900 census as born in Oct 1899. Both marriage certificates list the bride as MISS Odye Keeling and state the date of the ceremony and the name of the person who performed it. The certificate for the first marriage was never picked up, and the 1930 census for Upshur County states that the date of the first marriage of Erwin was ABT 1923. These circumstances suggest that the first marriage was dissolved without divorce. Erwin Honeycutt was under 18 years of age at the time of the marriage in 1920 and would have required parental approval (but did he have it?).
Alice Cynthia Keeling was born on 29 Aug 1902 (or 1901) in Upshur County, TX, died on 5 Jul 1978 in Houston, Harris County, TX, and is buried there at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, according to her death certificate and Upshur County birth records. The 1910 and 1920 census ages are more consistent with 1901 as year of birth, which is far more likely if the year of birth of Annie Belle (next) was 1903.She married Robert Edwin CANTRELL [29 Sep 1907- 3 Jan 1955; buried Forest Park Lawndale] ABT 1928. Her grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.
Annie Belle Keeling was born on 28 Aug 1903 (or 1904) in Upshur County, TX, died on 29 Dec 1976 in Dallas, Dallas County, TX, and was buried at Hopewell Cemetery in Upshur County, TX, according to her death certificate, SSDI, and Upshur County birth records. The online Upshur County birth records list Annie's birth in 1904, but have an entry for "Mittie Belle Keeling" on that exact date in 1903. According to the Upshur County Deputy Clerk, that record had been transcribed from the original listing on an old ledger, and could have been miscopied. Moreover, the census entries are more consistent with 1903 than 1904, although the latter year is given on the death certificate, the delayed birth certificate from 1942, the SSDI, and the grave marker. My best guess would be 1903. Annie Belle married Huey Augusta THOMPSON [1 Sep 1906 - 16 Sep 1996; buried Hopewell] on 30 Aug 1945 in Dallas County, TX. Their joint grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.
Myrtle Faye Keeling was born on 16 Nov 1905 in TX, died on 10 Sep 1982 in Livingston, Polk County, TX, and is buried at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, Harris County, TX, according to her death certificate and the online Upshur County birth index. That index unfortunately lists two dates for her that are exactly one year apart: 1905 for "female Keeling" and 1906 for "Myrtle Faye Keeling," the latter clearly being the delayed certificate. Census records are more consistent with 1905, as are the SSDI, the death certificate, and the grave marker. She married W. R
Nina Maye Chrystelle Keeling was born on 19 Jun 1908 (or 1909) in TX (according to the UCBI), died on 1 Apr 1985 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, TX, and is buried at Highland Cemetery in Stamford, Haskell County, TX, according to her death certificate. The death certificate, grave marker, and the SSDI list her year of birth as 1910, which is inconsistent with the earliest census listings that are consistent with 1908. The 1910 census was taken in April, before the listed date of birth in 1910. She is listed as Nina M (age 2) in the 1910 census (enumerated in Apr 1910) and Nina C (age 11) in the 1920 census (enumerated in Jan 1920, which is consistent with 1908). The UCBI lists her both as "female Keeling" born in 1908 and as "Nina Maye" born in 1909, with both entries for 19 Jun. It is seems likely that her full name was Nina Maye Chrystelle Keeling. She married Doyle Lee CHILDRESS [1 Apr 1912 - 10 Feb 1999; buried Stamford] on 19 Jun 1932 in Miller County, TX. Their joint grave marker is shown on findagrave.com.
Woodrow Wilson Keeling was born on 12 Sep 1913 (or 1912) in Upshur County, TX, died on 28 Jun 1994 in Bell County, TX, and was buried at Lafayette Cemetery in Upshur County, TX, according to the TDI, UCBI, SSDI, and his grave marker. The UCBI and SSDI list his year of birth as 1913, while his grave marker and the Texas Probate Birth Index (delayed) list his year of birth as 1912, which is consistent with the 1920 census listing. He married Eileen Cathryn LOYD [5 Oct 1919 - 7 Jan 2002; buried Fir Lane Memorial Park in Spanaway, Pierce County, WA] on 20 Feb 1940 in Fort Bend County, TX. Both of their grave markers are shown on findagrave.com.
