Patrick Benjamin Keenan, Sr., or PBK, was a son of Patrick Keenan (1766-1832) of Ireland and Kentucky, and Cassandra Burch. PBK married first to Roberta Chambliss. She and their children died in Clay County, Illinoi, the result of a cholera epidemic. Then Patrick B. Keenan, Sr., married Mahala Reed in Clay County, Illinois. Eventually, they removed to Kentucky.
According to records at the National Archives and Records Administration, or NARA, in Washington, D.C., this Patrick B. Keenan, was registered for the military draft in July of 1863 by the United States Government. This was the time of the Civil War. He was listed as a resident of the 11th Congressional District, Clay County, Illinois; white and a farmer. He was also listed as 41 years of age as of July 1, 1863, the date of his conscription as a Class 2 draftee.Whether he ever served in a military unit was not known. His classification as "Class 2" suggested that he was "unassigned."
