Dear John
The confusion about Richard's ancestry arises because a genealogist was (I think) paid to trace his ancestry in the 1970's.The researcher wanted a quick result and resticted herself to the Bedfordshire records. She therefore connected the Marston family to a family called Keep living earlier in Northill. This link depends on a John Keepwho died in Marston in 1719 According to this genealogy, this John had been born in Northill in 1695- which means he would have been 24 years old when he died.A will for this man has survived. This shows that he had grandchildren. What's more this 'John Keep of Marston' was taken back to Cold Brayfield in Bucks to be buried, so he is obviously not the same man. I spent some years tracing the real John Keep of Marston back to Cold Brayfield and then back to Wellingborough and Ecton in Northants.I then traced this family back to the thirteenth century in Bucks. There is a great deal more information available about this family, as compared to the Northill family cannot be traced further than Batholomew Keep and his (?) father Thomas Keep in an 1570's.
Best wishes
Philip Keep
