There is an article on the Kees Family by Don C. Wood in "The Berkeley Journal, Back Creek Valley, Part I," issue 21, 1996, published by the Berkeley County Historical Society:
"No link has been established between the Jefferson County Gersham Keys family and the Kees of Back Creek Valley."
"The original tract purchased by Phebe Kees for 30 pounds 15 April 1790, contains the Kees Cemetery which lies northwest of present Shanghai."
On 13 December 1791 Phebe Kees deeded 50 acres to John Keys. (Note: some of the early spelling is with a 'y').John Kees had six children."
A deed of sale dated 7 May 1849 is between John Kees and Barbara, his wife, and Peter Kees. The deed states that Peter Kees now lives on the farm earlier owned by John Kees, deceased, that he was an heir with Philip Kees who sold his interest in the 50 acres to Daniel Kees in 1830.This establishes John, Peter and Philip born 1803, d. 1875, and Daniel Kees as all being heirs of the earlier John Kees whose wife was Catharine Miller, daughter of Daniel Miller."
