Hello Cousin I have re-evaluated my earlier theory and now believe William C. Rich was a son of Lott Rich b. 1758 who married 1st Mary B. Williamson.Lott b. 1758 and Lewis were signers as witnesses to a will of D. Dodd in 1813.
Mary Williamson was the daughter of Lewis Williamson. The Lewis Rich name was a constant in the William Rich line and in the Lott Rich line in Sampson County.I believe the name originated from Mary's father.I think Joshua was William's brother or uncle not his father. Why would William name a son Lewis James Rich if Lewis were not his grandfather? And why did the name Lewis also follow Lott's line in Sampson County. Why does William show on one census that he was born in Sampson County?Because he descended from Lott of Garland, Sampson/Duplin County.
William named a son Lewis and a daughter Mary.
I have found 6 men named Lott Rich in Sampson Co, born 1758, 1764,1807,1826,1827,1849.The ones born 1826 and 1827 are 2 different men, one son of Owen and one son of the Lott born in 1807.I can't piece together anything concrete on William yet but I am fairly certain I am right.I also think they came from Argyleshire Scotland with a group who landed at New Liverpool on the Cape Fear also known as Wilmington.I do know that Lewis Williamson and his wife Mary were Argyleshire Scots.
Also, for further study, I found the earliest local Rich grant was on both sides of the Neuse River and went to a Timothy Rich in 1764.Then David Rich was a signer on a 1779 petition to separate Sampson from Duplin County.
