John:One of these days I'll get it right. Was back at Harvard today and pulled the Cohan book to see if there were any further details re the surname. First, the book is George M. Cohan, The Man who Owned Broadway, by John McCabe pub. 1973. Turns out that Jerry, John M's father was born on Blackstone St., Boston, 1/31/1848 of Michael and Jane who were immigrants from County Cork. Michael's ancestors had the old spelling. Michael simplified the name to Keohane which in turn became Cohan at the time of their entry into the US.
Interesting second point. George M's married his 2nd wife Agnes Nolan in 1907. Agnes was one of 18 from Brookline, MA (largest family in Massachusetts at the time). George bought the Nolan family a larger home in Brookline as well as a summer home in Nantasket, MA (a beach community south of Boston) across from another large Irish brood, the family of Joseph P. Kennedy Senior! (Hope the author didn't screw this up as I know the Kennedy's had a home in Brookline and then moved to Hyannis - wasn't aware of Nantasket).
