hi all.i'm posting the following information, in case any Keohanes/Keohans are interested in the Australian side of the family!
a couple of Keohanes from Cork were transported to Australia as convicts in the 1850's:- Catherine Keohane (trial date 1847, crime - larceny clothes, transportation 7 years), and Thomas Murphy Keohane/aka Thomas Murphy (trial date 1851, crime - burglary and robbery, transportation 10 years, died in Spike Island Prison 8 March 1853). i don't know if these 2 were related, or married, as these are the only details. i found this information at www.nationalarchives.ie as you're probably aware, many many Irish people were transported to Australia as convicts, and also came as free settlers or bounty brides (single women who were paid 10 pounds to come out as domestic help and encouraged to marry men here) - in fact it is said that 400 Irish women populated most of Australia!
i don't think i am related to the convicts - as per below:-
my great grandfather William Keohane (b. 1853/4 in Clonakilty) came as a free settler to Australia in 1870's; he became a Postmaster and lived in various places in Victoria and New South Wales; married Esther Saunders (daughter of Mary Murphy and Thomas Saunders who came to Australia from Ireland & married in 1841); had several sons and daughters, one of whom was Patrick Gerald Keohan (b. 1894 in Wallsend, NSW) who was my grandfather.Gerald (as he was known) married Isabella (Ella) Wemyss (she emigrated from Scotland), and had one son - Ian George Keohan (b. 1931) my father.Ian married Margaret Hobbs, and has 4 children: myself Ann Elise, Louise Jane Mark Andrew, Kathleen Frances. all my siblings are married with children, and the Keohan name is being carried on by the latest arrival - Shannon Michael Keohan, my brother Mark's 2 month old baby son.there are only a few Keohans in Australia, and it seems we are related to them; though because my grandfather Gerald left his wife when Ian was a baby, my father was cut off from his paternal relatives, and it is only in recent years that we have discovered some of our cousins! xxx anna
