SPRINGFIELD - James M. Kerns Jr., 81, of Springfield died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at Heritage Manor.
He was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Taylorville, the son of James M. and Crystle May Followell Kerns Sr. He married Mary Lowe in 1946 in Taylorville.
Mr. Kerns was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and earned three overseas service bars, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign ribbon with four bronze battle stars, the good conduct medal, and the World War II victory medal. He retired as a carpenter from R.D. Lawrence Construction Co. after 30 years. He previously worked for Capital Wood Works. He was a member of the Carpenters Local 16 and West Side Christian Church.
Survivors: wife, Mary; two daughters, Pamela (husband, Thomas) Yeager of Springfield and Deborah (husband, Leonard "Bud") McTaggart of Pawnee; son, Timothy (wife, Janet) Kerns of Lincoln; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary (husband, Hib) Knape of San Manuel, Ariz., Evelyn Ess of Kincaid and Doris (husband, Buz) Oller of Taylorville; and several nieces and nephews.
Services: 9:30 a.m. Monday, Bisch Funeral Home West, the Rev. Vaughn Beeman officiating. Burial: Pleasant Plains Cemetery.
