I think that Thomas V. Kersey who married Mary B. Steuart may be a different person from Thomas Kersey who married Laura Ballard. Two pieces of information are causing me to think this way:
1.1880 census Census Place: Emporia, Lyon, Kansas Source: FHL Film 1254387National Archives Film T9-0387Page 183A Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Thomas BALLARD Self M W W 55 VA Occ: Miller Fa: --- Mo: --- Luan C. KERSAY Dau F W W 32 IL[Is she really a widow?? if so Thomas V. Kersey who married Mary Occ: Keeping House Fa: VA Mo: VAB.Steuart must be different person than Laura's husband] Cora KERSAY GDau F S W 9 IL Fa: VA Mo: IL Levie KERSAY GDau F S W 12 IL Fa: IL Mo: IL Susan BALLARD Dau F S W 9 IL Fa: VA Mo: VA
matched with 1870 census Winchester, Scott Co., Illinois p306 and following Dwelling 135 Ballard Thomas 47 Virginia Matilda 42 Virginia Mary 25 Penn Samuel 18 Illinois William 24 Illinois Margaret 28 Missouri Kersey, Thomas 29 Illinois Laura 21 Illinois Liven 2 Illinois
so it looks like this Thomas wife Laura is a widow in 1880
2.1860 census Winchester Scott Co., Illinois dwelling 21 Thomas Kersey 56 Delaware Margaret A. 35 Illinois Thomas F. 19 Illinois ...
Thomas F. rather than Thomas V.
Is there anything I'm missing that makes it more likely that these two Thomas Kerseys are the same person?
