There has apparently been a well kept family secret regarding my family surname of KENYON. During a search for the Martin KENYON family in the British census of 1881 the family was listed under the surname of KERSHAW,and later while reviewing the 1891 census, it gave the same family information under the surname of KENYON, the difference being thateveryone was ten years older. Martin indicated his birthplace as Worcester and it appears that with almost certainty that he was born to a KERSHAW family of Yorkshire census strays living there when he was born in 1852. His father would have been Joseph KERSHAW and mother Martha, both of Yorkshire and furthermore, Joseph was born in Sowerby Bridge in Yorkshire where all of Martin’s children had been born. The question remains…why would he move less than ten miles to Elland, change the family surname and take over the ownership of The Star Inn? Would anyone with any knowledge of a Martin Kershaw with wife Rebecca and three children, Sarah, Charlotte and Joseph please contact me. Thank you in advance.
