The name in Germany is spelled:Ketter, Koetter, Kotter, Ketterer. There is also Ketzer, Kutter, Katter. In England, there is Kettering. The name is said to be from Cotter, which means cottage on a small farm; however, I have found the name goes back to the 5th century and originally meant a soldier who wore chain mail armor. There are villages in Russia, Poland, Germany, and of course the village of Kettering in England, and the sea lane between Denmark and Sweden called Kattergat, all of these places were named a variation of the name Ketter, and put on maps by the Romans. How your ancestor spelled his name when he first came over to America, is a clue as to his origins overseas.
