Please help. I still have not solved my problem of the two George Washington Catron's, as to the parents. I have a lot on Peter's family and Judge John, and many Catrons, but have problems of Peter having a son George W. per his will, etc. Also cannot find anything on Christian. I need help here also. I am posting my FTM "notes" in hopes someone will be able to help. I will be happy to receive corrections, as well as sharing.

Peter, the son of Christopher (Stophel)was born in Scharrof, Germany in 1754, Christened 5-13-1754 per LdS.and died in Wayne Co., Ky in 1840. He was eleven years old when he landed in Phil. Pa. in Sept. 1765 on the ship "Chance". His family migrated from Pa to Va in 1766.
Peter served in Capt. Doacks Company in the militia in 1774, at age 20, along with six other Catron's.
One battle was at Point Pleasant, W. Va. In this battle Shawnee Indians were defeated in an attack on frontiersmen at the juncture of the Ohio and Great Kanawha Rivers. In the treaty of Camp Charlotte the Indians yielded huntingrights in KY and agreed to allow transportation to go unmolested on the Ohio. This war was known as Lord Dunsmores War.Dunsmore, the Colonial governor, had promised the frontiersmen "horses and booty" for serving.
May 13, 1780 "The Cumberland Compact" was signed by settlers around Nashville (French Lick). Among the 250 signers were Peter, Phillip, and Francis Catron. This petition was to N.C. (Indians)(TN was part of N.C. until 1792).
Peter was also in "The Battle of the Bluff's",in present day Nashville, where several hundred Cherokees from the TN River Area attacked the fort on April 1, 1781.
On April 17, 1786 he was granted 640 acres of land south of the Cumberland River, for serving in the War of the Revolution. Peter's land probably joined his brother Philips grant of 640 acres, also south of the Cumberland River near Nashboro (Nashville , TN.)
N.C. Grant Book G-7 pg. 56-57 4-17-1786 Grant #111 640 acres Warrant #583 Davidson Co.
Peter lived in Grayson Co., VA when son John was born abt. 1781-1786.
He rec'd Grant in Davidson Co. in 1786. Since Peter was granted land in TN, near Nashvillein 1786.
Did Peter go back to Wythe VA for George W. to be born there in 1792??)
Peter moved to Wayne Co., Ky. in 1805. He lived in Beech Hollow, just north of Monticello (KY)on the East Fork of Elk Springs Creek.
On February 18, 1805, he had purchased 200 acres on Elk Springs Creek (KY)from Honorable and Mrs. Marsha Sharp for $1,100.00.
On April 1, 1806 he purchased 20 acres from John and Patsy Mills for $100.00.
*** ("My George W. was b. in KY in 1811, Peter was in KY in 1811, while the other George W. born 1792 was born in Wythe VA.) I have not found Peter to be in Wythe in 1792.
Peter got land grant Near Nashville in 1786, did he move back to Wythe VA before1792 when the older Geo. was born.

Excerpts from Peter's will:He left, "all the estate and property I may then be the owner of be vested in my son John Catron" etc. "Out of the proceed of which, should my wife Elizabeth outlive me she is to be supported well and comfortably for and during her natural life, to which purpose my said son is authorized to appropriate any or all of said property real and personal at his discretion, and without control." " My Negro girl Eliza if living and not necessarily disposed of for my wife's maintenance, I desire my son to give and convey to my daughter Mary Swift. " etc. signed Oct. 31, 1832. witnessed by Albert Jefferson, Martin Beaty (son-in-law husband of Elizabeth Catron , married in 1820 in Wayne Co.) and Francis P. Stone. State of Ky, Wayne Co.
"A William Simpson Clerk of the county____the county Afo. do certify that the Foregoing last will and testament of Peter Catron which appears from the record of the Wayne Co. Court by the oath of Albert Jefferson and Francis Stone, two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be accepted whereas from the same together with this certificate has been duly recorded in my office. Given under my hand this 10th day of August 1846.signed byW. Simpson,Clerk."
In the "History of Wayne Co.,KY, written in the 1880's an account is given by an old tailor, who was then in his 80's,of his making a suit of clothing for Peter Catron in 1837 at Monticello, KY, for him to wear to Washington to see his son John take the oath as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
From the Va. Manuscripts of the "Wisconsin Historical Society" we read: "in 1834, Wayne Co., KY, Peter Catron three times a volunteer from Montgomery Co., Va. for service in the Militia 1776-77 under Captains Walter Crockett and John Stephens; Cherokee incursions in the Holston Country; Capitan J. Martins Company of Rangers in Powell's Valley, treaty of Long Island; born in 1754, son of Stuffle Catron.
Peter Catron, father of the Justice, in 1834 applied for a Revolutionary Pension. (Pension # #S 15363 - Virginia)The veterans sworn declaration made in order to obtain it recites some of the Revolutionary movements in Southwest Va. Some excerpts from Peter's application, " and the said Peter Catron cannot read the English Language" "Was born in the year 1754 in Germany, came to Pa. with my father Stuffle Catron in the year 1764. In the year 1766 moved to Montgomery Co., Va. and remained there until 1804, then to Wayne Co., KY where I now live and have lived about 29 years" (See my files for complete Pension Statement, complete will, etc.)
One source showed a May Kettering b. to Peter & Eliz in @ 1785 in Montgomery, VA. May have d. as infant if this is correct, as she is never mentioned in Peter's or her brother John's will. The other sisters were named, but not the brothers.

One of my relatives quotes a Henry Catron of Springfield, Illinois (I don't know anyting about him except that) who said that a George Washington Catron was born to Peter Catron and Elizabeth Houk on 11 Mar 1792 in (presumably) Wyeth County, Virginia. He would have been a brother of Associate Justice USSC John Catron. This family went on to Wayne County, Kentucky but a brother of Peter Catron whose name was Jacob Catron stayed in Wyeth County and then went to White County Tennessee. He had son Christopher and perhaps others. One of Christopher's sons was named John (b. 1796)and he was named after John Catron the justice (who in 1812 left Kentucky and moved to Tennessee he is buried in Nashville). It is not impossible that another such namesake could have tried. I do not have direct evidence of your George Washington Catron but there may have been many sons of Jacob I do not know about, I do not know if George Washinton son of Peter had children (or even if Henry Catron of Springfield was correct. Other relatives say the elder John was an only son) and there was another Catron brother, Francis, of Peter and Jacob in Virginia who no doubt had his own children who I as yet haven't found indformation concerning. Also, Peter Catron's father Christopher (Stophel) Catron had a brother and a cousin (Johan Jacob and Mathew but I am not sure which was which or whether they changed their name from Kettering to Catron as Stophel's children all did.) who followed him to Virginia from Germany. My sources were a private paper put out years ago in Virginia by a man named Macy I think (The old timers all insist the content is correct) and for Jacob Catron's people I referred to the book Thomas Benton Catron and his era by Victor Westphall (U of Ariz Press). I hope that is of some help. There is a source on the net I can perhaps refer you to if you e-mail me who knows more. Good luck and please let me know"
