It seems that the Kizziahs etc in the USA are descended from a Phillippe Cessier that was born sometime around 1620 in Calais France . He married a Huegonot wife and eventually settled in Holland . In 1690 he and his wife and her family immigrated to the colony of New Amsterdam on Manhatten Island . The Dutch were tolerant of diverse religions and intermarriages . Cessier was a founder of the colonial village of Harleem where he surveyed lots and became a magistrate - a judicial official . After his death his widow , children , and her family moved to Long Island . He had at least 8 sons . Three of these have been traced . They moved south first to maryland and their families gradually spread to VA and NC. In the New World the name went through various changes and spellings into what we have today. It seems that many of his descendants in Va - present day WV - moved eastward into Ky , Ill , Tenn and Ind. It seems that Phillippe was quite a literate man having signed his ships manifest and various court and land records on Manhatten . While I'll not argue with people who want to be a Tuscarora Indian the facts simply do not bear this out . AOL users are invited to to check out the History of Bertie County NC where there is a discussion of Chief Cashie and that he was fabrication of a writer back in !857 . There is a cashie river in NC and and a National Wetlands of the same name on the NC coast , but alas no Chief Cashie . This is all backed up with researched evidence .
