When I was at Clayton Genealogical Library in Houston some years ago, I found the list of marriage bonds for Kentucky that showed Lucius Kibby's bond to his second wife (my ancestress) Emily Taylor, but the record calls her the relict and widow of Absolam Taylor, not the daughter.I have seen in at least one other posting the note that she was Absolam's daughter. Is there another source for information on that second marriage that says that she was indeed his daughter and not his widow?
Lucius and Emily Taylor Kibby's daughter Matilda Ann Kibby, who married Mr. DeLong married a second time, I assume after Mr. DeLong's death, to Victor Tunis, before the 1850 census of Iowa, where she is listed as Victor's wife.(I have the record somewhere in my files that gives the specific dates of her marriage to Mr. Delong and her second one to Mr. Tunis--Ioway marriage records--and shall try to hunt it down.) Matilda had children both by Mr. DeLong and by Victor Tunis (a native of France, according to census records). Her two children by her second marriage were my great granduncle Frank and my great grandfather Lucius Victor Tunis, named for his father and maternal grandfather, Lucius Kibby.I have a copy of the baptismal record of Luke Tunis's baptism by a French-speaking priest, who spells Matilda Kibby's (Kibbe's) name Mathilda Cubey.According to family lore (which is very sketchy), Matilda died in or shortly after childbirth with Luke.(My grandmother and her sister did not even know Matilda's name.My grandaunt was named Mattie, probably what Luke recalled from his family that his mother was called. My grandmother and grandaunt thought that her name might have been Martha. They did know that she was a Kibbe.)He and his older brother were given over to the care of Victor's brother (who was also Luke's godfather).I assume that that means that Victor was also dead by that time, but I suppose that he could have lived longer and have had his hands full with the children by his first marriage.
I have no record of the deaths of either of my great great grandparents Tunis but intend to keep looking.I can supply a little more information if you or any other descendants of the Kibbes are interested.I mainly wanted to address the matter of Emily Taylor's maiden name and to let Kibbe kin know that there is a line that made it down through Matilda Ann Kibby DeLong Tunis to Walker County in East Texas, where Luke met my great grandmother Beulah Benton Hayes Fitzgerald, Hayes being her maiden name.Great grandfather Luke (Lucius Victor) Tunis died in 1954, when I was just barely a year old.He died in Port Arthur, Jefferson County, Texas, having been honored in the local newspaper a year or so before his death as Port Arthur's eldest citizen.
Is Mr. Scott Prentice's book on the Kibbes still available?
