KIBLER, WILLIS - Details of the Murder of Willis Kibler in November 1895. Newton Kibler one of the witnesses in the following account of the murder was later tried & convicted of the crime & served a number of yrs. in the penitentiary though he always claimed he was innocent. He is now living somewhere in West Virginia. About 4 miles northwest of Luray, on the West side of the Shenandoah River, near Bixler's Ferry, lived for many yrs. Willis Kibler. He was an old bachelor, a respected citizen, reputed to be worth considerable money, which he always kept about his person. On Tuesday afternoon, 05 Nov 1895, he was murdered in a manner most foul. Coroner Dr. W. L. Hudson was summoned on Wednesday morning, who, accompanied by Dr. L. H. Keller & stenographer, W. E. Williams, went to the scene of the tragedy & held the inquest. The following jurors, A. C. Huffman, C. A. Garber, W. W. Wood, L. W. Youngblood, G. T. Long & W. T. Chrisman, were summoned, who heard the testimony, which is as follows: Dr. Keller: I found 3 wounds one supposed to be made with some blunt instrument, on the back of the head, crushing the skull, which would have been sufficient to have produced instant death. One, a gunshot wound, on the left side of the face, under the eye, penetrating the brain. The upper jaw & all the bones of the face were crushed in. The throat was cut, severing the windpipe. Either one of these wounds was sufficient to have caused instant death. I found the pocket of his shirt, where he usually kept his money empty & unbuttoned. Newton Kibler: I stay here with my uncle. Have been here about 12 months. When he came from the election at Springfield, about 4:00, I was plowing the hillside. He told me that he was feeling well & asked me to bring the colts down out of the field & he would get some water. I heard a gun fired and then went and got some corn and gave to the colts. Then I heard a gun fire twice. It was 3 or 4, or 4 or 5 minutes between the time of the first shot & when I heard the double shot. I was gone about half an hour from the time I told him I would look after the colts until I heard the first shots. I left him at the barn when I went up in the field. After I heard the shooting I stopped & fed the horses before I went to the house. The dogs met me, barking & whining & running about as I came toward the house. I cam around on the lower side of the house & saw that the door was open. I noticed my uncle's foot outside of the house, at the corner, near to the chimney of his house. He was lying on his right side when I first saw him. I took hold of him & called him, but he did not make any answer. I heard a little sound of some kind just then, but suppose that it was made by me when I took hold of him. I brought him into the house by myself and put him on the bed. I went & told Cy Dickson & he said that he would go over & stay at the house while I went to tell my father. Dickson said that he would stay there until I returned. I did not see anybody around here yesterday up to the time of the killing. I was here all by myself. I never noticed whether things were torn up about the house; and I did not go into the other house, his house, until this morning. There were no marks of violence about the place that I noticed; that widow-shutter was just as you found it this morning, closed. When I first came into this room after the shooting the gun was lying right across the foot of his bed (pointing to where it was lying). Both loads were out of it when I first took it up. I placed the gun back up where my uncle generally kept it. that axe is not my uncle's. I do not know that I have seen that axe. I handled the gun after I had pulled my uncle into this room & placed him on the bed. I think that I loaded the gun last. I know that both barrels were left loaded. Henry Nichols: At the time of the shooting, I was right up above the house, about a half mile, I suppose, from the house, working on the road. It was about half after 4:00 when I heard the report of a gun & 5 or 6 minutes after the single report. I heard a double report, two shots, like a double barreled gun. I also heard some dogs barking. I could not locate the sounds exactly. I thought perhaps some one was squirrel hunting. I was up on the road above the house, putting up some rocks which had fallen in the road. The jury rendered a verdict to the effect that the deceased came to his death from a gunshot wound inflicted by some one unknown to them. This is one of the most brutal murders ever committed in Page County & for the good name of the county no time nor effort should be lost till the fiend who perpetrated the dark deed is brought to justice. Mr. Kibler has 2 brothers living in this county, Jacob Kibler who lives some 7 or 8 miles north of Luray, on the River & Albin Kibler of the Kimball neighborhood. Mr. Kibler was an old Confederate soldier & received wounds in a battle at Jacsk's Shop, in Madison county, from which he came near dying. (issue 25 Jan 1938)
