I had always thought the family was Swiss, but according to my great grandfathers manifest in 1907 from Europe to America the family was of German heritage.For certain the family was from Switzerland, though.
The furthest back I have starts with:
Johann Kihm (poss. April 1842 - ?) married (Karoline?) Keller.They had four children:
Martha Emilie (12-29-1900) lived in Konigsberg, Germany married name unknown; Hans; John (1873 had three children:Trudy, Max Otto and Elsy);Otto Kihm I.
Otto Kihm I Sr. (04-21-1882-1950?) was born in Switzerlandcame to America in 1907.According to the 1920 census he was naturalized in 1912 and was listed as a machines manufacturer.lived in Passaic County, Paterson, New Jersey where he met and married Bertha (see) Ogenfuss (08-1889 - 1922?) who was born to Henry and Bertha Schneebeli Ogenfuss, who were both from Switzerland, in Passaic County, Paterson, New Jersey.She had one surviving sister, Clara Furler (07-15-1890).Otto and Bertha had three sons:
Otto Robert, my grandfather; George; William;
After Otto Sr. went back to Switzerland he married again to a Martha Emilie and they remained together until their passing.
Otto Robert Kihm:(01-3-1910 - 11-2-1973) was born to Otto and Bertha Ogenfuss Kihm in Paterson New Jersey, Passaic County.He was 10 when his mother, Bertha, passed away in New Jersey.His father took he and his brother, George, to Frauenfeld, Switzerland leaving the remaining baby brother, William, to live with Bertha's sister and husband Clara and Ben Furler in New Jersey.Otto Robert Kihm traveled to learn languages and went to Belgium to learn French in April 20, 1928.He stayed at a boarding house where he met my grandmother, Emilliene Emmerence "Marguerite" (see) D'Hont (12-6-1907 - 05-27-2002) who was born in Iseghem, Belgium, (a province of West Flanders) to Gustave Vincent, of Iseghem Belgium,and Elisabeth (see) Bonne (see) D'Hont, of Ruysselede, Belgium.Grandma's siblings were:Achile, Marie Naessens and Hector Leopold.Grandma and Grandpa had two children.
Grandpa and Grandma Kihm came to Miami Florida where they lived until the late 1950's when they moved to Cleveland, Ohio where they both passed away.
