My ancestor Joseph Kilby was born according to the 1851 and 1861 census returns in either Offley or Lilley, Hertfordshire around 1789-1792. I have not been able to find a baptism in either parish on the IGI for anywhere around this period of time, however I have found three other men with the surname Kilb(e)y born in Offley on the census returns - William Kilby b. abt 1783-4; George Kilby b abt 1787-8 and Isaac Kilby b. abt 1796-7.
Joseph Kilby married Sarah Marlow (1791-1850) in 1816 in Offley and had at least 8 children baptised in Offley and Lilley: Mary (1817-1888, spinster); Samuel (1818-1885 m. Fanny Plummer 1838); Elizabeth (1820-1896, m. Isaac Oakley 1844, my ggg grandparents), Harriet (1825-1889 m. John Plummer 1844), James (1826-1877 m. Hannah Nash 1847), Charlotte (1829-1903, m. William Summerfield 1854); William (1832-1887, m. Mary Ann Lanchbury 1861); Isaac (1834-1910, m. Elizabeth ?? abt 1862). Possibly also a Charles Kilby born between 1820 - 1825 (between Elizabeth and Harriet) who appears on the 1841 census with the family of Samuel Kilby, although he could have been a cousin rather than a brother.
William Kilby m. Mary Cherry (b. Pirton, Herts. abt 1791-2) 1826 at Offley - this was possibly his second marriage. They had at least 3 children; Samuel (bp. 1827), William (bp. 1829) & Mary (bp. 1832).
George Kilby married Martha Smith 1812 at King's Walden, Herts. They had at least 4 children (all bapt. Kings Walden apart from Henry who was born at St Paul's Walden); Sarah (bp. 1812), Martha (bp.1813), Mary (bp. 1817) & Henry (b. abt 1825-6). Possibly other children b. 1818-25?
Isaac Kilby was married to a Martha (b. abt 1791-2 at Offley, maiden name unknown, no marriage on IGI). By 1851 at least, they had no children living at home. No baptisms for any children found on the IGI either.
If anyone has come across any further information about Joseph's origins or any Kilby families in Offley or Lilley in the lte 18th century, please reply. Also if you have any connection to or information on the families of William, George or Isaac, please let me know. Thank you.
