APPLICATION OF STEPHEN A. KILLMAN TO BE RECOGNIZED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION 1908
BROADHEAD/KILLMAN The following is the text written by one of my great-great uncles in an unsuccessful application for the Western Cherokee membership in 1908.My question as you read this is: Concerning all his ancestors that he refers to being 'driven out' of various states...how do the dates and areas correlate with various instances of Indians being herded out of certain states? Thanks for your help!!
Stephen A. Killman bring first duly sworn, deposes and says:My name is Stephen A. Killman.I live at Mincy, MO.I was born in 1853 in Monroe County, KY.I was born on the line between KY and Tenn.I claim my Cherokee blood through my father, Henry Killman, and his grandmother. My father died in 1896 and was 74 years old when he died.He was born I reckon he was in Overton County, Tenn.My great grandfather came from VA somewhere between 1835-35 and went to KY.He was driven from there. My grandfather lived in Tenn right on the line of Tn. and KY.I don't know whether my grandfather was born in VA or KY.My grandfather's name was Leaven Killman. My grandfather's wife's name was (Mary) Hendricks. My great-grandfather's(should be g.mother's) name was Jinsie Broadhead, and she is the one through whom I claim. She was a full blooded Cherokee Indian. My great grand-mother, Jinsie Broadhead, was never enrolled to my knowledge. In 1835 my grandfather, I think, was living in Tenn.I think he moved to KY after 1835.My grandfather was driven out of Tenn. to KY.I don't know why he was driven out.He said some of them were carried out west.He said there was never any treaty made with my grandfather. My grandfather was not a member of the tribe at the time of the tribe.I don't think my grandfather was ever a member of the tribe.I guess my father was living with my grandfather at that time.He was with him all the time until was a man of his own.My father and grandfather never received any money or land from the govt. on account of their Indian blood.I don't think either them was ever enrolled.
