William Kilvert 4/13/04
Well this is what I have on this family:
1850 - Samuel Kilvert (age 43 born in England) is a moulder living in Providence Rhode Island along with his wife, Mary (49), and 3 sons born in Rhode Island. The sons are Charles A (age 15), Samuel W (age 14), William H (ag 12). (There's also a 16-year old Irish girl in the household, probably a servent).
1860 -- Samuel W Kilvert (age 49 b. in england ) is an agent of a Furnace Co. and living with his wife Mary (age 49) in Lewiston, Androscoggin County Maine.
Also, nearby, in Auburn,Androscoggin, Maine are are Marantha Dunn Kilvert (age 20) and Thomas Kilvert (age 2 months) living in her father's household.
But none of Samuel (sr born in England) are in Maine. Instead,Two are in Ohio and one is in Boston:
Charles A Kilvert (as Charles A Kilbreth, age 26) is in Chillicothe, Ohio
Samuel W Kilvert (as S N Kilbreth age 24) is in Chillicothe, Ohio
William H Kilvert (age 27? born in Maine) is a clerk, living in a hotel in Boston, Massachusetts
1862-1863 - Charles Kilvert serves in Company K of the 73rd Infantry Regiment Ohio fighting on the union side in the U.S. Civil War. He enlisted on March 29, 1862, performed "distinguised service", and received a disability discharge on May 20, 1863. The 73rd was organized December 30, 1861, under Colonel Orland Smith, it entered the field in January, 1862, operating in West Virginia until May, when it engaged Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley, and participated in the battle of Cross Keys. In August it took conspicuous part in the second battle of Bull Run, acting with great gallantry and losing about 150 men. It remained near Washington until December, when it joined Burnside at Fredericksburg, and in April, 1863, was at Chancellorsville.
1870 -- I can't find Samuel and Mary Kilvert, but they must be somewhere because they show again in 1880 living in Providence Rhode Island and they didn't die until 1883 (Samuel) and 1887 (Mary)
Samuel W. Kilvert (jr) is a grocer living in Chillocothe, Ohio along with his wife Elizabeth D(un) Kilvert, a daughter (Mary age 2), and a son (John D, age 5 months).
Charles A Kilvert is nowhere to be found.
William H Kilvert (age 31?) is living in the Portland, Maine household of his father-in-law(Gershem Cox)along with his mother-in-law, his wife (Emily Cox) and his son who is enumerated as "Max. A".

As far as Civil War history is concerned, here are some key dates for this family

February 1861 -- The South Creates a Government.
February 1861 -- The South Seizes Federal Forts.
March 1861 -- Lincoln's Inauguration.
April 1861 -- Attack on Fort Sumter.
April 1861 -- More States (Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina) Join the Confederacy.
June 1861 -- West Virginia Is Born when Residents of the western counties of Virginia do not want to sucede (joins union as state in June 20, 1863)
June 1861 -- Four Slave States (Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri) Stay in the Union.
July 1861 -- First Battle of Bull Run in Virginia
January 1862 -- President Lincoln issued a war order authorizing the Union to launch a unified aggressive action against the Confederacy. General McClellan ignores the order.
April 1862 - Battle of Shiloh - On April 6, Confederate forces attacked Union forces Shiloh, Tennessee. When Confederate forces retreated, the federal forces did not follow. Casualties were heavy -- 13,000 out of 63,000 Union soldiers died, and 11,000 of 40,000 Confederate troops were killed.
Januaryy 1863 -- Emancipation Proclamation.
May 1863 -- The Battle of Chancellorsville. On April 27, Union General Hooker crossed the Rappahannock River to attack General Lee's forces. Lee split his army, attacking a surprised Union army in three places and almost completely defeating them. Hooker withdrew across the Rappahannock River, giving the South a victory, but it was the Confederates' most costly victory in terms of casualties.
April 1865 (Big Month) -- General Lee (Confederacy) surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse,The Assassination of President Lincoln.

I wondered also if Marantha was Charles' wife. Charles could have just "split" from Marantha and that could explain why he was Ohio in the 1860 census without her, or it could have been planned that she would follow him later after the baby (Thomas) was born but didn't because of the war or whatever. It looks to me like Charles died of wounds shortly after his discharge (but no evidence yet), but what became of Marantha and Thomas? Did she remarry (different last name) or die as well. And if she (and baby?) died, was it before or after Charles enlisted? Etc. many more questions than answers.
