I found on some of my surfing the web that there is not actually a McKinlaw it is the McDuff's of Kinloch. The McDuff Clan was dropped before they left Scotland. Kinloch means North side of the lake "Loch Ness".
Kinlaw was the name our ancestors used in Robeson Co. to Americanize their name. At first in the census it was listed as Thomas Kinloch then later as Thomas Kinlaw. It could also be that they couldn't spell the people in the area spelled it like Thomas pronounced it.
