Harry/Henry Kinley married Sarah Ross in Ross County OH in 1834.Henry who was born in 1801 in TN and was brought into Ohio with Thomas Embree the head of a Quaker family. Mr. Embree sued a number of whites in Tennessee for illegally holding free blacks as slaves. The free blacks were from Virginia and worked for wages for the whites who subsequently stole them away when they moved into Tennessee. The Embree family believes one of the people held illegally was our Henry's mother.Unfortunately, the court in TN threw out many of the records. The Quakers only managed to salvage records of one case of a negro girl named Milly who was being detained by a white farmer named John Squibb. We don't know the resolution of the case because the Quakers were not able to salvage the records. Even if Milly was our Henry's mother, we don't know who his father was, or where the name Kinley came from.
We believe Sarah and Henry had several children although we only know the name of one for certain. We see the family on the 1840 Census in Scioto County then they disappear until 1870.Through various documents we know one son’s name to be George Kinley (born Jan 5, 1840 in Portsmouth, OH.)George Kinley married Lucy Russell of Kentucky in Oxford, OH.They had many children (Catherine/Kate, Nettie/Nellie, Ethel, George, Wiley May, Sarah Leona, Ralph, Elsa, Earl, Flora, Bessie, Lulu, William Edward.)Their children later moved to Dayton, Cincinnati and Indianapolis, IN.William Edward married Elizabeth Frances Thompson and had four children (Margaret, Wilbur, Minnie and Grace.)I am looking for anyone who may have information about the rest of Sarah and Henry’s children.
