This is a very belated reply to the preceding posts as I have only just begun looking into my Kinloch forbears.
My great grandfather John Fortune married Julia Kinloch, daughter of George Kinloch (formerly of Kair) & Sophia Anson, in Madras in 1878
Your 'James Kinloch' was her grandfather, brother to George Kinloch who had no children. Thus it passed to his nephew,Julia's father.I have his DoB as 1766 but these are from 100 year old notes made by my g'grandfather. The brothers were sons of George Farquar Kinloch who took on his mother Catherine Kinloch's surname under the terms of her father George's will after she had married the handsome 'Silver Turner' James Farquar in 1728 against his wishes. So you see, the Kinlochs are really Farqhuars.
We have portraits believed to be of George & Catharine Kinloch and James Farquar and also of George Farquar Kinloch that were rescued from a barn sometime after Kair was sold in 1876. There is also in existence an 18th century group portrait by Alexander Nasmythof all George Farquar Kinloch's children (except James for some reason)with Kair in the background (Don't ask me why butcheap prints are for sale from outlets all over the web, wrongly attributed to David Allan, Just google 'Kinloch family').Curiously, I have just found out that the paintingwas once owned by the family of my flatmate at University thatand we are in fact distantly related- though he is Irish. Where the painting is now I have yet to discover.
We also have a miscellany of notes about the Ferriers from a hundred years ago.
