My great grandparents David HARDMAN and Jane A. HARDMAN are at 16 Walshaw Rd, Elton on 1881 census with their first child Jane A. HARDMAN. (My grandfather William Percy HARDMAN was born in 1887.)
Family lore is that Jane’s birth surname was KIRKBY. Jane A. HARDMAN was (according to the census) born in Salford; she is age 25.
Could she be another child of William and Jane KIRKBY? They are at 25 Tottington Rd, Elton, on the 1881 census, which is just around the corner from Walshaw Rd (according to www.multimap.com). William is shown as 42, Jane as 50; William would have been 17 when Jane A. HARDMAN was born, if she is their daughter. (A lot of Janes, aren’t there?)
David and Jane also had Elizabeth, Dolly, May, Ethel, Edith, Charles, Cidney, and Arthur, but I don’t know their birthdates.
The more I look at how close the KIRKBYs and HARDMANs lived, the more I am convinced of this connection.
