Dear tex, Thanks for the email. No, I have not written to N. C. I
have'nt been working on the Kirkes line lately but promise I will get to
it soon. Did I tell you I have placed James Kirkes' birth in South
Carolina as a son of Thomas in 1800. Thomas emigrated from Scotland just
before that. He came through Wilmigton, N.C. and migrated West around
Wiley lake on the border of N.C. and S.C. and probably crossed there.
Thomas jumped ship according to one Kirkes memory and married a Dutch
girl. James had five sons, George, Thomas, William Henry, John C. and
James Washinton. They had three girls, Martha, Ellen and Sarah. Any of
those could have been his mother's name. James married Elizabeth Cupp
daughter of James and Milla Cupp in Gwinnett County, Ga. in 1821 and
moved to Walker in 1835. Stay in touch, Judy

The title is in (old) Danish, 'Kirkis' is not a name but the genitive case of 'kirke' (church). It is probably misspelled and should be written 'Kirkes'. Translated into English the title will be something like:"Spiritual Love Songs of the Bridegroom and the Bride, Jesus Christ and His Church, i.e. Song of Songs, Explained and Authored by Song."

1850 - GA, Waker Co. census.
Hello! I have found my Kirkes' and they were from Walker County, Georgia. William Kirkes was married to Mary Ann Elizabeth Simmons. Their daughter, margaret married Chauncy Graham Smith in AR. I found William's parents as well on the 1850 Waker County, Georgia census. It was James Kirkes and his wife Elizabeth who I just found out was a Cupp from Indianna. James Kirkes is the one on the information you sent me. Although he was in Walker County Georgia in 1850, he was born in York County, SC in 1799 or 1800 as he was 50 years old on Oct 21st when the census was taken. I guess we must be related some how if you desend from James. He and Elizabeth had a lot of kids. I am waiting for the 1840 census to arrive to see if there are more kids who had already gone by 1850. Thanks for the help. Judy
