Kirkpatrick family of Clay County, Tennessee, circa 1880
Mary Patrick (18 March 1868 to 26 January 1942).
She was a Full Blooded Cherokee Indian. Her parents (Didanawisgi & Mahala) never took a White Man's name, they kept their Cherokee names.
Mary Patrick's parents and grandparents escaped from "The Tail of Tears", as they were on the route. They were members of the "Paint" clan. They hid out in an area SW of McMinnville, Tennessee. They later went along with many other Cherokee to the areas of Putnam, Overton, and Clay Counties in Tennessee. Many Cherokee knew of this area because of "The Standing Stone", at Monterey, Tennessee.
Her Parents died when Mary was twelve, in 1880.
She was taken in by a family of Kirkpatrick’s in Clay County, Tennessee, and raised by them. She took the White Man's name, "Mary Patrick", so she only used part of the "Kirkpatrick" name.
She married Joshua Winchester "Dock" Garrett (20 March 1844 to 10 October 1925), as his 2nd Wife (his 1st Wife, "Pollie Ann Kirk" has passed away, in 1886), in 1888.
Joshua changed Mary's name to Mary "Pollie Sue" Garrett when they married. He called her "Pollie", as he did his first wife.
My quest, is to find the "Kirkpatrick" family that "adopted" Mary Patrick, after her Parents died, in 1880.
Any information, would be greatly appreciated.
