Hi Stuart, I am related to Robert Kirkup, who was alive around 1760, and a landowner and farmer in the town of Rothbury. Apparently he took a member of the Douglas family as his wife.. there were three daughters and no sons so I assume we're not directly related through this particular Robert. My ancestress, Mary, married William Davis, who held a high-ranking position with the General Post Office, London. I am trying to go back as far as I can on the Kirkup side and prove my descent from Clan Douglas. There were more than a few Robert Kirkups living in and around Rothbury at the time i am researching, so I have no conclusive parents for my Robert as yet. I am also related to the Howie (Howey) family of Northumberland, as Mary's sister Margaret married a James Howey and had several children.
I'm sorry I can't be more precise but I am trying to obtain church records for Rothbury which may give an exact birth date for Mary as well as a mother's name. It would seem likely that all the Kirkups living in this part of Northumberland around this time would be related.. I have also found a town called Kirkhope in neighbouring Lanarkshire which may be where the Kirkups took their name. Anyway hope this finds you well,
