Jane, I have a Michael Kivlan listed in the Boston city directory in 1853. When did your Michael move there? There were other Kivlans listed, too. My ancestor was Margaret who was allegedly born in Boston c1838. She moved to Scranton, PA by the 1860s where she was married, widowed, and married again. I am going to the regional archives in Denver this Friday (9th) -- I haven't been for over a year! There were two other Kivlans in Scranton during that time period and I need to check them out on the census. I don't have Margaret's father's name yet. I was thrown off track for YEARS because Margaret's name was given as CIFFLIN on a grandchild's death certificate-- can you believe that?
There are no Kivlans or anything even close listed on the Boston 1850 soundex (all spellings) which is frustrating. So, my Kivlans were in the U.S. at least by 1838 -- do you know when your Patrick arrived? Could they have been in Boston as early as 1853?
I am sending this to your email as well as posting it here. Thanks!
