My mother is 84 years young. Her grandparents were Joseph Fettig and Katherine Sophia (KLOTZ).They came from Alsace-Lorraine region along the Rhine River that was constantly under dispute between France and Germany. The Fettigs are French in origin, but living under German rule and having their books burned and being forced to speak German left their descendents believe they were German. It was not until seeing a travelogue did I discover that my mother and aunt were definately of French ancestry.
Katherine had a sister, Caroline (Carrie) who married Al Klein.
My mother always pronounced Klotz as KLUTZ which is the way her grandparents pronounced it.
Joseph Fettig built a home in Logansport, Indiana that is stone and looks like a French settlement not far from San Antonio, TX that claims to be modeled after homes in old France.
My mother's father, Carl Charles Fettig was not allowed to marry the girl of his choice; Joseph and Katherine said he had to marry a daughter of one of their friends from the "old country" and they made the trip to New Jersey for his bride.
The Fettigs and the Kleins were Roman Catholic and helped to build St. Joseph's Church (now All Saints) on Market Street at Second, in Logansport (Cass County), Indiana.
I hope this may give someone information that might be helpful.
