I have since found out more details. Henry Kneeland Jr. killed himself on August 2, 1861 "shooting-suicide" it says in the ledger of the NY Surrogate Court.
I also found the elder Henry's will, which is interesting in that he bequeathes 1/5 (he had 5 children) of his estate tothree of his sons - not including Henry; The 1/5th destined for Henry Jr. goes into a real estate trust to be administered by his three brothers and his cousin. And old Henry nominates, again, his three other sons and his nephew as executors, pointedly omitting Henry Jr.
Whether Henry Sr. felt that Henry Jr. was incompetent, irresponsible, or what, I couldn't tell - but he obviously had misgivings about leaving him his part of the estate outright.
I suspect that Henry Jr. may have learned something about his father's involvement in the Jewett scandal 25 years earlier, and that he couldn't handle what he considered the disgrace.
Kurt, what is your connection to that family?Henry Jr. is my gr-gr-grandfather.
