I need some help from folks familiar with Canadian Knipes.I have been searching in vain for information on my ancestor’s immigration and homeland for the past 10 years.I now think that I have been looking in the wrong direction. My 2nd Great Grandparents William and Eliza (Taylor) Knipe emigrated from Ireland between 1812 and 1835.I always assumed that they arrived in the USA through New York City since my Great Grandfather Samuel was born in Massena, New York (across the St. Lawrence River from Ontario, Canada).
Recently I found out that several of his children were born in Canada, rather than the USA (Mariah M. Knipe, Sarah A. Knipe, Ester Knipe, and, William D. J. Knipe). With this new information, I went surfing the web and found the Canadian 1871 Ontario Census Index. This Ontario Census Index list a Samuel, a Solomon, and an Archibald Knipe all approximately the same age as my ancestor William John Knipe, and all being born in Ireland. This is important because William named his first son after himself, his second son Samuel, his fourth son Solomon, and his fifth son George Solomon Knipe.Subsequently, my Great Grandfather Samuel Knipe named his first son Archibald. The similarities in names and locations are just too close to be coincidental.
· Is there anyone out there who is related or familiar with these 1871 Ontario, Canadian Knipes and can share information with me?
· Looking at the above names, does anyone’s records show a relationship between the Ontario Knipes and the Northern New York/Wisconsin Knipes?
· Can anyone help me with where these Protestant Irish immigrants to Canada came from in Ireland, and where and on what ship they arrived in Canada?
Thanks for reading about my genealogical tribulations.I sure could use some advice, or if by some Internet miracle you are a descendant of the Canadian Knipes, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
