Frantz Kohli came to America in 1819. He brought with him his wife (Christiania) and their three children, Christian, Elizabeth, and John . They came from Bern, Switzerland where Frantz was born in 1779. They settled in Holmes County in 1821, where he made his living as a farmer and tailor. The daughter, Elizabeth married Christian Harshman May 13, 1831. They were married in the Gospel of Luthern Church in Holmes County, Ohio. The rest of the family move to Putnam County, where early land records show a Francis Kohley buying 40 acres from Israil Hubbard for $180 on Oct 24, 1845. This land was located southwest of Pendleton (Pandora). This land resales on May 8, 1848; the grantors were his wife and two sons. Frantz had died Aug.6, 1847. Christian married Margaret Berkey Oct 27, 1831 in Holmes County. The children we know of, are Christiania b.1833, John b.1834, Peter b. Jan 4, 1836, Jacob b.April 1,1839, Susan b. 1840, and Mary b.1845. John married Verna Snavely Feb 14, 1837. They had 8 children, Josiah b. 1837, Samuel b.1839, Elizabeth b.1842, Andrew b.1845, Isacc b.1847, John b.1849, Eli b.1851, Sarah b.1853. Verna dies in 1855 and John marries his widow neighbor, Barbara Hilty Steiner. She was the young mother of nine children. Her husband had been Christian Steiner, a minister of the Mennonite Church. The Typhoid epidemic of 1853 had killed 30 members of the church; he was one of them. John and Barbara married March 23, 1857. They had 5 children together, the youngest two died as infants. Christian b.1858, Daniel b.1859, Emanuel b.1860, Adam and Amos. There is a very good book written by a descendant of Emanuel Kohli. She has told me, she still has copies of this book.
