Frederick David Kohrt and his wife Juliana Marie Catherine Post were married in Germany abt 1851. Friends from the US sent Frederick and Juliana money for their passage and railway tickets to Chicago. When they reached the port on embarkation, they found that too many tickets has been sold for the steamship and they had to settle for a sailing vessel. The ship became lost at sea, and it was three months before they landed in New York (spring of 1854). First part of trip, they were and seasick and later, the food supplies ran low. It is hard to imagine their joy in reaching dry land. Unscrupulous German speaking piople met the ship and offered to help with their luggage. They stole a lot of their belongings. They had only ten dollars in cash and the train tickets to Chicago. This was in the spring of 1854.Lived in Chicago and Oak Park, Ill before moving to La Salle Co., ILL. The lived for a while in Serena and later in Brookfield Township.
