I am researching my husband's genealogy on his mother's side. Her mother was Mattie Koonce. These Koonce's came from North Carolina & settled in Texas, particularly in Freestone Co. in the late 1800's.The first ancestor to this line is JOHN (CUNYS) KOONCE who was born in 1675 in the Palatine Region along the Rhine River, Germany & died 9-23-1711 in North Carolina, who married Alicia/Alice ??? & was father of George Koonce I. The father is also listed as Johan Christian Koonce, born in 1675 in Heidelberg, Palantine area of Germany/Bavaria & dying at Core Creek, Craven Co.,NC. The last name is also listed as Kunitzsle.John, Michael & a daughter were killed in the *Tuscarora Indian Massacre at Core Creek, Craven Co., NC on 9-23-1711, only George survived. The minutes of Craven Co. Court of 1-21-1712/1713 list George becoming a ward of Captain Jacob Miller along with George Kornegay after his parents were massacred.John's occupation was a Vinedresser in Germany. They were of the Catholic Religion in one publication, but listed as Protestant in another. The family arrived in Virgina about 1710 from England.John & Alicia's daughter was born in Germany in 1708. John's family left Germany in 1709 & settled in England. *The Tuscarora were of the sicth nation of Irogquois Indians & originally settled at the Neuse River region of east North Carolina.
