Simon Kopf is my great-great grandfather. I don't have a lot of information, but I've gleaned a few things in my search.
He was born 24 Jan 1855 in Ottersweier, Baden, Germany to Mathias Kopf and Maria Anna Rheinschmid, although I have not been able to specifically verify their names in any records other than what has been handed down to me. He immigrated in 1872 or 1875 and was a cook m. 11 Jun 1876 to Margaretha Rhein (Ryan) in Cook Co., IL b. 1853, Boher, Tipperary, Ireland (?? Still looking to verify this) d. 12 Nov 1888, Chicago, Cook, IL m. 20 Aug 1889 to Mary P. Miller, Tippecanoe Co., IN b. Jan 1856, PA d. 4 Mar 1928 in Toledo, Lucas, OH
Simon emigrated from Germany in 1875 at the age of 25. He married the next year in Cook County, IL.By 1880, Simon and Margaret were living on Columbia Street in Fort Wayne, IN with their two children, his sister, Annie, and a servant, Bertha Broombaugh. Simon was listed in Detroit as a cook in 1884. Margaret died in 1888 while they lived in Chicago. Simon remarried the next year in Indiana and had three more children with Mary Miller.
Simon cooked in Lafayette, IN in 1891. They remained in Indiana until the the mid 1890s, were in Michigan at least during Cecilia’s birth and then moved to Toledo, OH by 1900 where he continued to work in a restaurant. In 1910, they were still living in Toledo with Mary’s brother, Joseph, and sister, Anna who was a cook at the restaurant Simon kept, and a niece, Helen.
A Simon Koff came into New York on the “Denmark” on 10 Sep 1872. This may be the same Simon person, but I can not be sure. One census records that he arrived in 1875.
