My grandmother’s name was Ruth Ruhama Cornegay born in 1890 in Pelican Lake Wisconsin. Her parents were William Dickson Cornagey and Josephine A Thomas married 1878 in Wisconsin. Ruth was one of 11 children (Eva, George, Minnie, Charles, Gertrude, William, Ruth, Fred & Ed - twins, Raymond & Blanch. The family moved to Washington state sometime after the 1900 census was taken.
William Dickson Cornegay was born about 1851 possibly in Tennessee. Williams’s marriage record states that his fathers name was also William and the only thing in the mothers name space is what looks like Ruhamy. (Similar to my grandmother Ruth's middle name). I am trying to link William to his real family and can find no records that really match. I have name matches but other info just does not add up.
I am very curious about a possible connection with the North Carolina Kornegays because of my Williams middle name. I have found other Dicksons and many Williams but the use of the name Dickson leads me to believe that there is a possible link here with North Carolina. I have seen that Wyatt Kornegay's wife is a Dickson and they have a William that was born in 1840 and died in 1864. They also have a Dickson born 1847 died ca 1855. So neither one of these fit as far as the dates I have for my William Dickson he did not die until 1922 in Idaho. I have also found a Dixon but he shows living in one place while my william is in Wisconsin.
The 1850 NC census lists 7 William Kornegays none whose information matches my William D. The story is the same with the 1860 & 1870 censuses.
I just can't find this guy before the 1880 Deer Creek, Outagamie, Wisconsin Census. He is listed as William Corniga. I realize this name gets spelled lots of different ways.
