Does anyone know why some Kovacs surnames were left Kovacs and others changed to Kowatch when their ancestor came to America from Hungary? I have read on this forum that the ancestor changed the name - my grandfather told me that they changed his name to Kowatch at Ellis Island. I have tried several times to have a Kowatch forum on genealogy.com, but it has not happened yet.
However, I am looking for any descendants of my grandfathers siblings that came to America and the one that stayed in Hungary.
My grandfather was Istvan Kovacs - born Nov. 18, 1880 in Budapest Hungary. He came alone to America in about 1905 and settled in Ionia Co., MI. His wife Barbara Befot Kovacs/Kowatch came the year after with their only child at that time. Istvan Kovacs name was changed to Stephen Kowatch. His parents were Johannes Kovacs/Kowatsch and Anna Stumph and they came over before he did and settled in Pewamo, MI. I think Johannes may have had a sister living there. They then went to Escambia Co., FL, where my dad was born, and they came back to Michigan. Somewhere along the line they moved back to Florida where Johannes died in the 1930s and Anna died in the 1950s. They had one daughter that lived in Florida. Her name was Anna Kovacs/Kowatch Schmidt. I know they had a son Frank and a grandaughter named Charlotte. I think Frank had a real estate company. Another son of Johannes and Anna was John and he lived in or near Youngstown, Ohio. Anyone know of these people? Another sister was Katy/Caty Kovacs who presumably was married when her parents and siblings came to America and chose to stay in Hungary. Anybody know anything at all about her?
Would love to hear from anybody about any of these people. Thank you!
