Writing from Illinois. My g-grandma was Minnie Kranz, daughter of Charles and Augusta Kranz. They migrated from Germany to the Kankakee or Livingston County area of Illinois in 1880. They *may* have come from Alsace-Lorraine. My best record of them is the 1900 federal census of Essman Township, Livington County; there Charles is listed as a farmer.
There is an earlier (1880 census) listing of a Chas. and Augusta Kranz in Kankakee, IL. There Chas. was listed as a cigar maker. They had a daughter, Hetwig, who would have been about the right age to be Minnie. However, Chas. was also listed in the 1879 Kankakee City Directory, which makes me think they might not be the same Charles and Augusta in the 1900 census.
I have other details of the children noted in both censuses.
I am curious about the possible Alsace-Lorraine connection and wonder whether you have heard anything of it.
