Seeking information on the family of DORA KRAUS born Jan 1884 in Russia and died 10 Oct 1946 in San Francisco, CA.Her mother's maiden name may have been GRUSHEFSKY.Dora entered the US in 1900 at NYC. Her residence in Eastern Europe is listed as Galicia.Dora's KRAUS known siblings are: Morris, Abe, Rebecca (Becky)and Benjamin.Morris, Abe and Benjamin at different times have been found living with Dora in San Francisco. One brother is a sign painter, another a house painter and the other a jeweler.Rebecca has not been located.
In 1910 Dora is found on the US Census as Dora BERMAN in San Francisco, CA and listed as divorced working as a housekeeper for a family. The children Sylvia and Harry are not found with her on the census.
Dora's other marriage was to Leo WOLENIK and she was divorced from him in the 1930 census in San Francisco, CA.At the time of her death Dora was still Dora Wolenik.
It is believed she was married first to Morris Berman in New York around 1901 but so far evidence of this marriage hasn't been located. Her dau Sylvia Kraus was born on 23 Sep 1902 probably in New York but again no evidence of location of birth. Her son Harry B Kraus was born 23 Dec 1903 in either NYC or San Francisco, CA, again no evidence of his birth location.
Dora's children were raised with her maiden name KRAUS as their birth surname. It is unknown why this occurred. It might have been she was unmarried when she had the children.
A possible father of these children is Morris Berman b 1879 Russia, arrived NYC 1900, resident of San Francisco CA on 1910 US Census, resident (patient) Napa State Hospital, Napa California on 1920 US Census and again in San Francisco on 1930 Census. No proof of this relationship to the children, Sylvia and Harry has been found.
Any information for the Kraus - Berman - Wolenik families would be appreciated by my clients the Kraus Family. The family story is that Dora divorced Morris Berman and then changed the surname of the children from Berman to Kraus her maiden name.We are seeking proof of this name change.
Thank you for your time in reading this story of a family who wants to solve a mystery at last.
