Fred was born, 23 Sep 1883, son of Hans and Mary (Bartles) Kroeger, both of German birth, who came to the US when young, married in Waseca Co., MN, and farmed in the area. Children of Hans and Mary Kroeger: John (farm near Otisco, MN); Henry (Waseca, MN); Edward (far near Lavina, MT); Fred W.(Saco, MT); Elsie (Mrs. John Lewer, Waseca, MN); Arnold (Lavina, MT); Paulina (Mrs. Fred Proehl, New Richland, MN); Katie (Waseca, MN); Esther.
At age 20, Fred W. left the family farm and came to Saco, MT, where he was employed as a mercantile clerk.Later he went to Hinsdale, MT, and worked for a merchant, J.M. Nelson, and leaving him went to work for the Havre Commerical Company, Havre, MT.He homesteaded for a while but sold his farm and for 8 months worked as the head of the commissary department of the Wisconsin Lumber Company in Littel, WA, then returned to Saco, MT, and became assistant manager of Saco Mercantile Company. On 17 May 1913, Fred went into business for himself selling farm machinery and in 1916 secured the Ford agency for Phillips county and part of Valley county.He was elected as a member of the first Board of Alderman of the city of Saco, and in 1919 appointed trustee of the Saco School Board.
On 12 Jan 1910, Saco, MT, Fred married Miss Nettie M. Stiles, daughter of Fred and Hattie (Avery) Stiles, who came to Montana from Cook's Corners, NY.Kroeger children: Lynn and Lester.
