Michael Kuhns (1757-1832) PA
Michael Kuhns was born 10 September 1757 or 1758 near Winchester VA. Around the age of 5 or 6, he moved to Maryland. Long before the Revolutionary War, he moved to Northampton (now Lehigh) County PA.
Michael served extensively in the Revolutionary War. First he served in the regular army under St. Clair, in Canada and upstate New York. In this tour, he fought in a battle at Three Rivers and was at Fort Ticonderoga, etc. Later he served in a Northampton County militia company under a Capt. Clayhons (= Pa. German pronunciation of Kleinhans) at the Crooked Billet (present-day Hatboro PA).
On 8 September 1778, Michael Kuhns married Juliana Gehres in Allentown PA. Her name is sometimes rendered as Julian or Julia Ann. Juliana was born January 1761 in [Pennsfield?] Township, Northampton County PA.
In 1796, this family moved to Turbut Township in Northumberland County PA. Michael died there in December 1832 and Juliana survived to at least 1840.
Their children and approximate years of birth:
Elizabeth (1780) -- deceased by 1840
Mary (1783)
Caty (1786)
Peter (1787)
George (1792)
David (1794)
Hannah (1800)
How do I know all this? I ordered this Revolutionary War pension application file for this guy, because I thought he might be the Lt. Michael Kuntz who was called up to active duty with my ancestor Daniel Wert in the 2nd class of Northampton County militia. (See my earlier post at this forum.) Wrong! It is a different Michael Kuhns. So here I sit with his file. It contains interesting details on his military service, so if you're interested, just let me know, and I will gladly share the details with you.
