I purchased the subject undated studio portrait of two young boys taken by Hancher, Clarksburg, WV.It is identified on the back of the mount, possibly in recent handwriting transcribed from an album page:
"Karl & Earl Kunst children of Dr. Kunst"
I found these individuals listed in at least two public member trees posted on ancestry.com.I found them listed in the 1880 and 1900 Census data for Weston, Lewis Co., WV.Earl/Earle is also listed in the 1910 Census data for Parkersburg (resided at 1103 Julian Street), Wood Co., WV.
George Karl Kunst, born Dec 1875 in WV, and Earl/Earle Kunst, born Jun 1878 in WV, were the sons of a physician, Albert H. Kunst, born 19 Feb 1845 in Pruntytown, WV, died after 1921; and Mary Matilda Camden, born Jun 1849 in WV, died 1907.Their siblings were Irene M. Kunst, born Oct 1881 in WV; Johnson P. Kunst, born Jul 1891 in WV, and Canden Kunst, born about 1892 in WV.
At the time of the 14 Jun 1880 enumeration, their father, Albert H. Kunst, worked as an assistant physician for the West Virginia Hospital for the Insane (1st Ward located on the west side of the river). When Albert applied for a U.S. passport on 9 Dec 1921, he was married to Loretto (maiden name unknown), born 25 Mar 1876 in Summerset, KY.In his application he stated that his father, G. H. A. Kunst, was born in Germany and died Jul 1875.
At the time of the 2 Jun 1900 enumeration, George Karl Kunst was employed as a 1st Lieut. U.S.V.At the time of the 18 Apr 1910 enumeration, Earl/Earle worked as a writer of fiction.I did not learn the death date for either brother.
